Meteor Shower

Post by just27 » August 11th, 2009, 3:55 pm

I'm reading that the Perseid meteor shower is happening tonight and tomorrow, with the best time to view being Wednesday (8/12) between Midnight and 5:00 am. Sadly, the moon is still pretty full, but I'll be in the back yard in my jammies, looking upwards with great expectations.

(Wouldn't this have been a great opportunity for the moonlight kayaking people to have set up a little late night paddle op!)

EVA

Post by Toothdoc » August 11th, 2009, 9:46 pm

Fellow Lunanauts. I will be going on an EVA starting thursday until the 23rd. Don't know how much erging will be going on while I'm gone. So someone will have to cover for me while I' away. Heaven forbid Robogirl should have and easy catch up.

Tomorrow will be my last row until at least Friday.

Hopefully the weather in the Adironacks will be milder than 95 degrees and 95 % humidity.

Alas mates, my kids have got me hooked on facebook - which is a tremendous way to spend even more time on the internet! But I finally took some time today to enter the last 3 days results. Motivation has also waned a bit due to the heat, other obligations, and work (dirty 4 letter word)

Row strong.

Checking In

Post by DuluthMoose » August 12th, 2009, 7:51 am

Congratulations Wild Bill on passing 3 million meters this season!

And Congratulations Dave H on achieving the one million meter mark this season!

Careful Chris. Paddling can be addictive (as well as good for your body and your soul) . Next thing you know there will be a half dozen assorted paddling boats taking up residence in your garage!

I had an adventurous time on the Wisconsin River this trip. Went through rain, winds strong enough to damage my tent, blazing sun with heat index into 3 digits (but the river was cool), also some very pleasant paddling weather, got aced out of our intended campsite the 2nd night and had to find another, saw more paddlers that were camping this trip than on the past 6 trips added together, and brought home another half ton of sand in my gear, in my clothes, and in my hair (even though I'm mostly bald. For those interested our group leader has already posted a trip report on Paddling.net at: http://www.paddling.net/message/showThr ... id=1167341
Also two of the participants photos of this trip are posted at;
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=7 ... 719c37d527
and at
http://s576.photobucket.com/albums/ss202/Renacapina/
I didn't take photos this trip, but did take another 1 hour video on the river to add to my "watch while rowing" collection.

One last sad thing to mention. The New Glarus Brewing Company has stopped making Uff da bock! How could they?

And winter is moving aside for warmer times! They are forecasting maximums of 28 degrees for Sunday in Sydney...not bad for winter (can't complain about that!) B)

I'll be out walking this weekend in preparation for my 'amended walk'. I won't be travelling to Papua New Guinea for the Black Cat Track, as it has been deferred until next year. Instead I'm walking to Newcastle, a city to the North of Sydney and will be covering 250 kilometres in 10 days (that's the plan). The terrain isn't like Papua New Guinea, but still plenty of hills and it will be a 'slog'.

I'm not sure if you have seen the news of the tragedy in Papua New Guinea this week; an aircraft flying to Kokoda Village crashed into a mountain in bad weather near the village......amongst the passengers were nine Australian walkers and villagers on the plane. Flying in a Balus (plane) is the life-line to the outside world for many villages along the track and many will be affected deeply by this accident. A cyclone passed through the region a couple of years ago and wiped out a bridge over the Kumusi River, making road transport to Kokoda Village much more difficult and consequently many walkers now fly direct into Kokoda Village. I remember crossing the bridge when the river was a raging torrent on my way to Kokoda in 2006.

For many Australians the Kokoda has become a pilgrimage to acknowledge and help better appreciate the sacrifices made by Australians and Papua New Guineans during the second world war. Many Americans also served in the region…..

Our thoughts with the families….

Thanks to all for the Meter congrats... now I just have to get back onto it and add some more!

Hey Chris - nice to see a new photo!
It looks like that may be a vineyard setting you have chosen? Seems like a theme is forming around your preference for things pertaining to grapes?

Cheers,

One of the great things about this team - and this forum - is the sharing of international experiences - and things that are important to us. The Kokoda plane crash of a couple days ago might have been reported by some US and other countries' news sources, yet the historical significance of the pilgrimage on the anniversary of some of the battles with the Japanese and Aussies and PNG might not have been reported. I thought the four sentinel pillars - with their commemorative words - of this particular memorial were quite impactful. From the Kokoda Walkway memorial website. A good reminder that many personal exercise journeys are driven by different events.

Image

The Isurava Memorial overlooks the Kokoda Valley at the site where the Australian forces dug in to face the Japanese invasion.

The memorial features a central stone of polished South Australian granite, raised on a plinth composed in bronze, Portland cement and granite.

Surrounding the plinth are four sentinel stones, each weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, engraved with the words courage, endurance, sacrifice and mateship, representing the resolute commitment of the Australians who stood firm in the face of the enemy.

The Isurava Memorial was unveiled by the Prime Minister, John Howard at a dedication service in the company of 10 Kokoda Veterans on Wednesday 14 August 2002, the 60th Anniversary of this epic battle.

Thanks for sharing, BBB - sounds like there is much work to be done in PNG on runways and access. Do be careful there next year!
