LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Get ready!
Who said anything about that "summertime and the living is easy..." stuff??!
Hooyah! What a perfect time to get set for a half marathon distance! Whether you and your erg are on land or in space, or you're sculling about in H20.....your meters (metres too) count in the Summer Sweeps individual challenge! 5K a day.....5K a day.....5K a day.....
The Summer Solstice row is less than three weeks away....mark your calendars for June 21st. If you haven't attempted a half marathon distance lately (or ever), this is a fine time to try it. You have enough time between today and the 21st to start building those meter totals to make this a comfortable experience. Really. Go for it!

I've signed up for a 3 hour dusk-to-moonlight paddle (kayak, not canoe ... but close enough in my mind) on the July full moon, so look forward to being the person in Jan's image!
Chris, if I'm going to give it everything I've got for a row, I have to prepare myself mentally in advance for at least an hour, and then stay focused on heart rate and cadence for the whole row. I also wait until there is a high pressure area controlling our weather before I attempt a strenuous row - more available oxygen should keep heart rate lower. From a cold start I work up to HR=135 for the first 5 min; then stay at HR=145 until min 20 when I am fully warmed up. Then I hold HR between 148 and 152 until min 45. Then I allow HR to rise to no more than 155 between min 45 and 55. If I have any more to give I will go up to HR=160 for the last five minutes, but do not go any higher. My output starts to go down as the heart rate goes up somewhere around minute 35, so thats why I control my HR in stages. I have to watch the PM3 frequently for HR and to keep my cadence constant at 26 or 27. If I don't stay focused I will drift to lower output usually within 45 seconds from sloppy form like allowing my legs to bow out rather than keep them driving straight back or not reaching as far forward as possible on the catch. I did watch one of my paddling videos on the PB row this morning, but it had little relevance to the outcome.
Ever since you made this post I have been trying to concentrate on form and focusing on my split time, I don't have a HR monitor. Yesterday and today I had a PB for a 48 and 60 minute row. Both times were sub 2minute splits. Thanks for your insight, cleaning up ones form can really yield big improvements.

Congrats!
Tim,
Wow! Way to Row Tim. Back to back PB!'s That's really great rowing! Glad to help get you thinking about performance improvements that can work for you. But I do need to make one more recommendation. If you will be frequently rowing for sub 2 minute splits over as much as an hour, it really is best to be using a HR monitor. I find for me there is enough day to day difference in how hard your heart has to work to maintain that kind of intensity, that it really should be monitored when you give it all you have. Congratulations!

Re: All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 6.03.09
This is so traumatic to see y'alls' meters posting and adding up ... my week is totally impacted with no end in sight until late Sunday. How could I possibly have scheduled my evenings and weekend with not even a spare half hour to row! Perhaps the "rest" will allow me to bounce back in a blaze of glory and pull a couple of PBs ... just like Tim! In the meantime, I'll continue to live vicariously through everyone else's accomplishments.Kona2 wrote:Good rowing everyone...in all kinds of weather!

Just relax and enjoy your time off. Then maybe some of us might have a half a chance to catch up.just27 wrote:This is so traumatic to see y'alls' meters posting and adding up ... my week is totally impacted with no end in sight until late Sunday. I'm finally back after being off the forum for a whole month. I just can't believe how last month just blew past. Been busy, busy, busy with more building projects for the homing pigeons (white dove release birds).
Anyways, I'm all caught up with all the news, so will do my best to keep more current, and not let it get away from me. Sure did miss everyone. Have started running training, and now have to find a way to squeeze rowing back into the day.
My apologies for dropping off the ship without letting anyone know what was going on.

As we row through space at rocket speed, a mysterious phenomenon is noted closer to Earth. Half moons have appeared over Australia, the Netherlands and Florida, USA overnight - and a full moon was seen over Nevada, USA. Stars of varying intensity dot the rest of the sky. Consulting the astral charts....our next full moon will be Sunday June 7th, so get your space goggles ready - it's going to be bright out there!
TEAM MILESTONE.....TEN MILLION METERS ....accomplished by 49 crew in 35 days! Wow! Our average participation (oars in space) during this time was just a little under 50 percent (48)
