My wife and I took another couple into the BWCA for what I consider a minimum effort fishing trip experience. Their physical condition was suspect to me even though they had been in the BWCA many times in years before. As it turned out we came out of the BWCA a day early. We did canoe in to the expected destination lake (West Pike) about 8 miles. The weather for the most part was cold and windy (as expected) and the nicest day near 70F and sunny was Thursday, the day we came out. We were wearing everything we had along to stay warm both nights. We got a little damp from rain on our entry day, and that was a big contribution to the chill factor. We negotiated the half mile portage just fine on the way in. We had a fine supper of lake trout and wild rice casserole on Wed, and then witnessed a fine sunset that evening. We were camped in a very pretty spot overlooking a palisade a quarter mile away on the far shore of the lake, and another back in the corner of the lake where we had traveled in from Clearwater Lake. The black flies were present, but not in great numbers. They were very tolerable.

But the guy we were with woke up with back pain on Wed after the first cold night in the bush and he didn't paddle on Wed to fish, indicating to me he was in pain all day. Thursday morning he woke up with worse back pain. So at breakfast we convinced him we should break camp and try to get out that day, and I was just hoping he could get himself back across the half mile portage. I wouldn't let him carry a canoe, but allowed him to carry about 26 lbs in a light portage pack and told him to use a piece of beaver wood for a hiking staff. He made it while the rest of us got everything else across. On the other side of the portage, I suggested that my wife and I just paddle the 6 miles to an outfitter and arrange a tow, but he wanted to paddle in. So off we went resting for him every 20 minutes or so. The wind was gaining strength and was against us. We had a late lunch and went another 20 minutes and he had to call it with about 3 miles to go. So my wife and I sprinted in the last 3 miles against 1 foot waves and made it to the landing in 55 minutes. I arranged for the outfitter to pick up our paddling guests with a power boat with a canoe rack, and that's how they got in. We drove back to our place in Duluth for the night and got our guests loaded up Friday morning and they started back for home. I know there was some good memories for him in the trip, but I'm sure this was a reminder to him that it's not as easy as it used to be. Sadly it may have been his last trip in. Age or fading physical ability eventually makes all wilderness travelers retire some day.

welcome back....thanks for posting about your trip and the pictures.....and kona2..i'm glad jesse is home...

I just got caught up on the last few days' postings ... wow, what a bittersweet canoe trip. The scenery looks gorgeous, and memorable, but I felt so badly for your hurting friend. (Every time you post pictures of your fish fry, I want some!)

Our trip to Ashland (OR) included Macbeth done with an "updated" flavor ... instead of 12th century Scotland, the entire cast wore jungle camo (think Che Guevara) or Nazi uniforms, with a few Mussolini fascists thrown in to keep us on our toes. It was quite odd, but the high school/college age people spread around the theater seems to think it was "awesome." At least the witches were still dressed in basic black!

Thanks! :D

My goal is 8 million for the season - we'll see how it goes.

I'll be out of the country for awhile later this month, but don't let Kiba know - feels like she's ready to pounce

We're zooming through space towards our target moon! Today, we're surrounded by two half moons, a full moon and what looks very much like a cloud of space dust...Image...or was that Wild Bill galloping by? We're almost halfway to our destination. Astrogator predicts that we will reach the halfway mark somewhere around July 4th. Good rowing by all !

Season meters as of 33/365 = 9,288,036 m

Total meters on the day = 213,834 m

I completely forgot to upload my metres (20,000) I plugged everything in, and I thought I uploaded them, but then I checked because my name wasn't there and I hadn't

My oar was in space too!!
