Hi Chip - absolutely all paces are welcome! Please join us. The diversity of speeds is part of what makes the handicap so much fun. You never know who is going to crush their season best and win the race! [No sandbagging allowed! ]

Right now, this race is looking even more popular than last week. As of midnight pacific time, we have 10 rowers signed up (9 with target times). Here are the handicaps, with Chip setting the benchmark against which the handicaps are calculated:

CODE

Rower Computer Target Handicap
Chip (27:40) Chip2 27:40 00:00
Christine 26:00 troll 26:00 01:40
Andy 23:48 AndyBrasil 23:48 03:52
SGould 22:38 SGould 22:38 05:02
MarkP 22:31 Oregon 22:31 05:09
Jeff 21:40 JeffSauter 21:40 06:00
DougB 21:00 DougB 21:00 06:40
Sir_Pirate 20:45 Sir_Pirate 20:45 06:55
Cees 20:39 KC 20:39 07:01
alex huckstepp ALEX HUCKSTEPP ??? Sharkbait

I have the info in a spreadsheet, so I should be able to calculate new handicaps quickly if necessary due to no-shows.

If EVERYONE shows up tomorrow as signed up, my thought would be to split the group right down the middle and have a Group A handicap and a Group B handicap. The over 22-minute rowers would be in Group A, and the speedier folks in Group B. This would work out to a perfect 5 in each group. (No Jeff, I'm not hiding from you, but we'd be in separate races!) Alex Huckstepp signed up without posting a target time, so unless I receive one from him prior to the race, I may be forced to throw him in with the sharks!

I hope this makes sense to everybody. Please try to show up at least 10 mins early (1650GMT), just so that we can sort out who's rowing (along with any last-minute entrants) and decide whether or not to split the group.

Thanks everyone, and I look forward to seeing you online!

Regards,
Mark

Great session again today, plan for me was to just sit at 1:44 from start to finish an ignore everything going on around me. Was happy with the result, 1:43.9 Av split, think my finish time was 20:47.7.

Stroke graph looks good too, flat as a pancake

Big thanks to Mark for setting it up again , great job. Well done to the PB'ers too

Sir Pirate

Another great row! Thanks everyone!

It turns out that we had more rowers than we had lanes available, and due to some time constraints we could not split the group the way I had imagined. So I offer my apologies to those who were not able to participate.

The final times were:

CODE

Rower Target Handicap Actual 6k Time
Andy 23:48 23:48 03:52 23:37.1 23:37.1
SGould 22:38 22:38 05:02 23:45.3 22:35.3
MarkP 22:31 22:31 05:09 23:38.5 22:21.5
Jeff 21:40 21:40 06:00 24:33.8 22:25.8
DougB 21:00 21:00 06:40 23:41.5 20:53.5
Sir_Pirate 20:45 20:45 06:55 23:50.7 20:47.7
Cees 20:39 20:39 07:01 23:58.6 20:49.6
Alex Huckstepp 21:12 02:36 no final result?

There was a bit of confusion at the start, when Alex forget his handicap and charged off the line with Andy, only to stop and wait for a bit when he realized his mistake. There were a LOT of sharks in this race, so Andy, Steve and I were rowing for dear life in the final 1k to avoid getting munched!

As you can see, a few people again were pushed to new PB's, with Andy taking the crown (beating his target by over 10 seconds!). Andy put in a heck of a sprint at the end, successfully holding me off as I tried to overtake him.

Congratulations to Andy, Steve and Doug for new PB's, and thanks to all for a very challenging row!

Thanks for setting it up Mark. Even though I didn't get to see the race in progress, and got a late start (3:00 instead of 2:08), it was still a PB effort for the year. Cees, the replay looks great. It was a riot to see the pack of sharks all grouped together like that :~) I suspect the next 6K handicap will be even closer with the new PBs.

By the way Cees . . . only 83 pts down and closing on nonathlon

Cheers,
Jeff

This was my first handicap race, and I must say it was a great way to row fast. Cees and Pirate were catching up to me in the first half, lowering my lead from 70 meters down to about 50, where it seemed to level off. Mark had a 90 second lead on me, and it took forever to cut the lead down below 250 meters (the max the monitor shows). Once there, though, I was slowly lopping off meters with every stroke, which was fun to watch (but depressing because there were so many meters to make up!). At the end I saw a rower only 7 meters ahead of me, so I charged forward and caught him, ending up with a PB by 11 seconds. (Couldn't catch Mark, though.) Four hours later and my lungs are still burning!

Maybe a 5K or 8K next time?

Well done Doug, your stroke graph shows a nicely paced row.

I would like to try a Handicap 5K race soon after BIRC. I would like to try and go sub 17 on that one

Also, a 2K tear-up handicap race would be a real lung burner, something for us all to think about

Sir Pirate

Sir Pirate - on November 25 (Thanksgiving in the US) and November 27 I would like to row a couple of hard races. Probably a 2K on the 25th and a 5K on the 27th, both somewhere around 1500 to 1700 GMT. The 5K can be a handicap race, but I want a valid time for the 2K, so that would have to be a normal one. If you're interested in one or both of these, I can create races.

Sub 17:00 will be tough for me (that's 1:42 pace), but I might shoot for 17:10 (1:43 pace) and see what happens.

If anyone else is interested, let us know.

Not quite as exciting as last week. I was much more in control this race. I held to my 1:59.0 pace right to up top 750m to go. This time I cheated a little and speed up a little early. My sprint was much more controlled watching Mark catch up but not letting him pass. I really had a lot left. PB by 19 secs (from 2 weeks ago). I should have been more aggressive with my target time.

The 10k I finished in 1:49 reaching strokes of 1:42. Yesterday I finished in 1:51 peaking at 1:47. The finish of the 10k was crazy with everyone meeting at the same time.

Well - it sure makes the future harder.

Today I finished the 60mins under 2.00/500 - that "forces" me to do all short-distances under that pace : not sure I like that allways.

You are faster than that - but I think you get the picture.
