Baz,

On numerous occasion I have felt a little off my feed and forced my self to saddle up. Amazingly within 5-10 minutes most of the ague has dissipated and I felt better and for several hours after. I must point out this was not a PB row, just enough to get the blood circulating until I felt better. It works for allergiies too and I have plenty of the airborne type.

Hope you feel better soon.

Howdy....agree! I've always worked on the basis that as long as there is no fever, than continue as close to normal (no PBs) and keep everything working. This is just a common cold, although seemed to have been saddled with a couple in quick succession. They say two on average a year...so yippee..I'm done for the next 12 months.

Ps Good rowing, must be something you guys put in the water over there!

Hope everyone gets to feeling better, soon! I'm off for an exciting long weekend in places with no rowers ... however, there will be hiking and horseback riding ... so the cheese race drama will continue. Catch y'all on Monday.

Instead of American Idol....Italian Idol? Quite the voices on those young men....

Wowzer! We're officially done with the first four weeks of the 2010 rowing season! Our crew roster has 46 names on it this year, as compared to 33 at this time last year. What's really impressive, though, is that those 46 people are producing 95 percent more meters than last year at this time. Amazing! If we assume that our output will stay consistent through the rest of the year (not!), our projected year end totals will be in the neighborhood of 100 MM meters....and that's with 44 people. Whoa!

Image

Season meters as of 28/365 = 8,091,069 m

Total meters on the day = 275,253 m

Oars in space = 37 percent

MILESTONES....Bragging Rights....Celebrations!:

8 MM - The Team !
800 K William H....aka....Wild Bill (hooyah! you'll be entering the team's first million meter countdown pretty soon!)
500 K Will S
300 K Barbara
100 K Rick

ROWED THE DISTANCE:

Image FULL Moon = greater than 42,195 m in a 24 hr period

Wild Bill with 43,000 m

Image HALF Moon = greater than 21,097 m in a 24 hr period

Will S with 38,505 m

Chrs S Image with 34,485 m (not sure if this is all in one day)

Jim with 26,263 m

And thanks to all of today's rowers for moving our good ship Luna-Tic forward:

Steven 5,000 m (you've rowed 8.5% more meters over same time period in 2009)
Ted 5,000 m
Terry M 5,135 m
Peter G 5,500 m
Mitch (TS) 6,000 m
Kiba 10,000 m
Rick 10,000 m
Image Peter H 10,000 m
Teresa 11,376 m
Mitch J 12,208 m (having your own rower....priceless? you are rowing SIXTY percent more than same time last year)
Barbara 13,030 m
David T G 18,654 m
Dan C 21,097 m
Jim 26,263 m
Chris S 34,485 m

You're right, my meters were over several days. It has been awhile since I hooked up the computer to the rower. Spring brings so many other distractions...

Yeah it sure is nice just to be able to walk out into the living room and row. When no one's around I can get more time in. Trying to keep in mind the Summer Solstice row coming up, or am I thinking to far ahead?

I'm already thinking about the fall rowing challenge, so I think you're in the clear.

We're been having some pretty crummy weather lately. Nothing but thunderstorms, and it feels like a rain forest with the heat and humidity. Mind you that's completely typical for this time of year. It still just makes me want to curl up and read a book and not really think about rowing. I'm going to try and get in a big row tonight to pick up my metres for May. Hooray for movie marathons.. :P

Aaack! Who knew I was somewhat hemisphere-centric! While consulting the astroglossary today, I found reference to the Aurora Australis....or southern lights. The question I have is whether or not the increase in solar flares means that we have more visible auroras? Here's the YouTube version of the aurora http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icugqEEOgkg

Meanwhile, in our own rowing Universe, there are moon and star sightings! We're surrounded by a couple of half moons, a full moon and a RED GIANT! And, we have another returning crew member (number 47)......Nicole - welcome back!

Season meters as of 29/365 = 8,358,655 m

Total meters on the day = 267,586 m

Oars in space = 30 percent

Great job, Kiba! Make a plan - work the plan :!:

A Full Moon is OK, but those last 7,000 metres for a Red Giant require a real gut check - well done!

Thanks Bill, if you're talking about gut check, I can't believe you keep rowing 43 000m a day. Now I can see how you earned the name Wild Bill.

I have a 3 yr old cat named Jesse...the bread bandit. Somehow the slider was left open and he is on an adventure using up some lifetimes...somewhere. We hope. Suffice to say that the whole family spent the night looking for him throughout the neighborhood and no sleep has occurred. Mistakes may lie within the following.

Season meters as of 30/365 = 8,611,035 m

Total meters on the day = 252,380 m

Oars in space = 36 percent

MILESTONES....Bragging Rights....Celebrations:

900K William H
600K Dan
300K Darryl

FULL Moon = William H with 43,000 m

HALF Moon = Dan with 26,570 m; Jim with 24,500 m

And thanks to today's crew:

Wild Bill 43,000 m
Dan 26,570 m
Jim 24,500 m
Baz 20,429 m
Kiba 20,000 m

I'm back

Post by DuluthMoose » May 31st, 2009, 9:12 pm

I have returned from my early season canoe trip. For those who are interested I have posted some pictures on the web at:

http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/572735491KqDqnl

My wife and I took another couple into the BWCA for what I consider a minimum effort fishing trip experience. Their physical condition was suspect to me even though they had been in the BWCA many times in years before. As it turned out we came out of the BWCA a day early. We did canoe in to the expected destination lake (West Pike) about 8 miles. The weather for the most part was cold and windy (as expected) and the nicest day near 70F and sunny was Thursday, the day we came out. We were wearing everything we had along to stay warm both nights. We got a little damp from rain on our entry day, and that was a big contribution to the chill factor. We negotiated the half mile portage just fine on the way in. We had a fine supper of lake trout and wild rice casserole on Wed, and then witnessed a fine sunset that evening. We were camped in a very pretty spot overlooking a palisade a quarter mile away on the far shore of the lake, and another back in the corner of the lake where we had traveled in from Clearwater Lake. The black flies were present, but not in great numbers. They were very tolerable.

But the guy we were with woke up with back pain on Wed after the first cold night in the bush and he didn't paddle on Wed to fish, indicating to me he was in pain all day. Thursday morning he woke up with worse back pain. So at breakfast we convinced him we should break camp and try to get out that day, and I was just hoping he could get himself back across the half mile portage. I wouldn't let him carry a canoe, but allowed him to carry about 26 lbs in a light portage pack and told him to use a piece of beaver wood for a hiking staff. He made it while the rest of us got everything else across. On the other side of the portage, I suggested that my wife and I just paddle the 6 miles to an outfitter and arrange a tow, but he wanted to paddle in. So off we went resting for him every 20 minutes or so. The wind was gaining strength and was against us. We had a late lunch and went another 20 minutes and he had to call it with about 3 miles to go. So my wife and I sprinted in the last 3 miles against 1 foot waves and made it to the landing in 55 minutes. I arranged for the outfitter to pick up our paddling guests with a power boat with a canoe rack, and that's how they got in. We drove back to our place in Duluth for the night and got our guests loaded up Friday morning and they started back for home. I know there was some good memories for him in the trip, but I'm sure this was a reminder to him that it's not as easy as it used to be. Sadly it may have been his last trip in. Age or fading physical ability eventually makes all wilderness travelers retire some day.

Image Glad you were able to salvage what could have been a not so good situation, Moose! And while physical function can decline with advancing age, it can also improve with the right exercise regimens (which you certainly know) - I know we are all fighting the good fight to keep function! Row team row!

Jesse the cat is back! :D The dogs have checked him out (where have you been?!), and all is well.

Hard to believe that one month of 2010 rowing is behind us! Despite taking a few days off from rowing, Image Wild Bill is first to reach the one million meter countdown !

Season meters as of 31/365 = 8,819,940 m

Total meters on the day = 208,905 m

Oars in space = 30 percent

And thanks to today's crew for all the kinds of meters:
