How long will the avatar of the flag of Free Tibet fly at the top of our leaderboard? While Wild Bill has been a traveling man, Kiba (while training with the Guinea Pig Olympic rowing team) caught up with him...some say that he's tipped the stagecoach driver to skip the next few stops and go directly back to the space rower!

Kona2 a thaw at my destination lakes has indeed occurred! The satellite photo for May 10 shows Clearwater Lake and all the rest of the Ontario / Minnesota border lakes north of the Gunflint trail as ice free.

Are there going to be year end certificates from concept 2 in our log books? I read that there would be, but impatience is getting the better of me and I kind of thought they'd be there by now.. or maybe there already are year end certificates in our log books and I just missed them (if so, I need help finding them)

This is real, on the water canoeing into a back country wilderness canoe park (Boundary Waters Canoe Area), much like Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park over your way. I may wish it were a virtural trip before its over. Early season canoeing has its challenges - cold water, cold air, and rainy conditions make it necessary to be extra careful out there and on the watch for hypothermia. Unsettled weather make for wind, rain, waves, and storms. And of course it will be black fly season if the weather does give us sunny days and 70F. But the pristine beauty of where lake trout call home, the call of loons and wolves at night, and fresh trout frying up for supper makes it all worthwhile. On this trip our group will paddle in 8 miles (with one - half mile portage), set up a base camp for 3 nights, fish and explore the next 2 days, then head back to the landing on the 4th morning. I will log about 50 miles of paddling on this little trip, chasing after trout. Moose

Kona2 - Those who row on the water can easily record accurate distance, time, and average rate of travel with a WAAS enabled GPS unit. You just have to reset it when you start rowing and keep the unit on all the time you are on the water. Take the distance reading when you are done rowing and apply the proper conversion. If the reading is in miles(GPS gives to .01 of a mle), then multiply the total miles rowed by 1609.344 meters per mile for the distance in meters. I didn't claim any on the water meters last summer when I had my shell rowing / sculling class, but then again I wouldn't have trusted a GPS unit out on the water with us bunch of rookies and a whole bunch of crabs in the water. And I don't (and won't, even if I could) claim any meters from on the water paddling. Paddling needs to be a separate world for me.
