Guilty as charged....a parrothead since before there was such a thing, but a little too young to have watched Captain Troy.

Hi Jan - and Happy Mother's day to you...
No HM in that lot - split sessions around buying food and then cooking/ eating/ cleaning up for Mum and wife... the halo is glowing for another year!

14 grams carb

To lower the glycemic index, add 2 teaspoons flax oil or olive oil.

Recipe 1:
1/2 cup orange juice (not concentrate) OR 2 tablespoons lemon juice
9 tablespoons sugar
3/8 teaspoon salt
8 cups water

Recipe 2:
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) OR additional 1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 cup orange juice (OR 1/2 mashed banana)
2 T lemon juice
8 tablespoons sugar (OR honey OR grade B maple syrup)
2 liters water

(I have this thing about making my own stuff!)
Just27,

I llike the recipes, but I'm a little concerned with all the sugar. Wouldn't want all these ergomaniacs to end up no teeth in their old age. Maybe sub Splenda?

dc the sugar Nazi.[/quote]

Well, the sugar is there to supply the carb energy, so substituting with Splenda or other non-carb substitute won't achieve the same results.

Powdered Gatorade (Registered TM) has 13 grams of sugar per 14 grams of powder in the form of sucrose and dextrose. Next three ingredients are citric acid, salt and sodium citrate. Then flavors, monopotassium phosphate and color. The only point of the drink is to give you carbs and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) along with your water. Their mantra is "Rehydrate, Replentish, Refuel" (Registered TM).

I think carb and electrolyte replentishment are both areas of concern during extended exercise, which is why they are combined in one drink, but technically, you could eat/drink one and not the other if you didn't need both. It's just that a glass of salt water isn't too palatable anytime, much less during hard exercise. :D

dc the sugar Nazi.

ToothDoc - You won't like my "portage pills" either. The daily ration that goes in my pocket is one old fashioned Brachs sourball hard candy for every quarter mile or longer portage I face that day. It has to be a green one for the real nasty portages; those with steep climbs or decents, mud over ankle deep, or those over a half mile in length. I put it between my back molar and cheek and let it slowly dissolve. It's good for 20 to 30 minutes, gives me an energy pick-up, and keeps me from getting a dry "cotton mouth" from heavy exertion. But sourballs are becoming premium stuff - they are becoming really hard to find in the last 10 years!

Ok! Ok!

I checked with Rome and I got all of you a Papal Dispensation for sugar while erging or on water rowing.

dc (the sugar police)
I do have a problem with that much sugar but, as mentioned, that's kind of the point of the drink. I use honey ... and promise to brush my teeth right afterwards! I also wondered about agave nectar, and sent an email query to one of their distributors.

Meanwhile, thx for the dispensation ... and the chocolate something is already on the day's agenda.

Mitch - nice picture, I'm guessing it was taken on Cadillac Mt in Maine?

Leaky Tiki - another Buffett fan here, Cheeseburger in Paradise is one of the songs I like to erg to, keeps me focused on my goal - no zuchinni fettuchine or bulger wheat here!

Had a nice Mother's Day, my 15 yr old is back home after a week on the East Coast. The kid grew another inch, he's got me by at least 1/2" now (I'm 6'1"). Currently BasketBall is his sport of choice, can't convince him to try rowing...yet.
