A fine number, to be sure, Gina.

Thank you, everyone, so much for your kind words and support ... and for all those extra 1K's. I really appreciate the posts on the forum, and the PM's ... and my mom would have loved the Concept(!). As Jan mentioned, she rowed with us LunaTics last season ... convinced that the erg was helping her arthritis, and also helping to keep her blood sugar under control. A detached retina ended her "rowing career," but she remained interested in everyone on the team. She was also a very competitive 80 year-old and quite proud of the fact that she was #1 in the world for 1K in her age group ... regardless that there were only three other fine older ladies in that group!

thx again, all.

Chris,

So sorry to hear that your mom passed away.
She was such an inspiration!
Keep the wonderful memories!

I keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I will sure do a special 1K (maybe even 1027, like Gina) for her tomorrow, as I just got back to the Forum after a longer absence. Available time is tighter this days...

Andrea
P.S. Jan, today's posting is for two days.

Every so often, I refer to a day as a blue sky day. That means things are good. So what makes the sky blue...and why does the sky look so dark in space? We wonder these things as we row towards the moon. We wonder these things when one of the kids in the carpool asserts that the sky is blue because it is reflecting the oceans. Yikes. Yes...I am on a verbal mission today. Thanks to "How Stuff Works" I can set the carpool kids on the right path today - without just saying "I'm pretty sure it has to do with wavelengths of certain colors...". Sunlight (bright stuff) is affected by the nitrogen and oxygen in our atmosphere as it passes through. Without going into all the Rayleigh scattering stuff, suffice to say that elements in the atmosphere cause the blue light to be absorbed and scattered more efficiently than the other colors. The blueness we see on a blue sky day is atmospheric atoms scattering blue light towards us. The other colors just aren't scattered so well. So now we know.

Wowzer, mates! We're closing in on SIXTY Million Meters for the season! That's placed us at number six in the rankings!

Season meters as of 295/365 = 59,484,454 m

Total meters on the day = 176,643 m

Oars in the water = 20 percent

MILESTONES....Bragging Rights....Celebrations:

1.6 MM Rodrigo
800K Jan

No changes in the various million meter watches, so I'll let that one be. There is a fine race shaping up for the one million meter milestone with Mike C. and Gina leading the bunch (for now!), Karyn, Kristine and Jan as participants. Hopefully Tom P will start feeling better from his flu bout and be able to join in the scramble to the "finish" line.

And thanks to 2day's crew:

Will S 42,217 m
William H 26,000 m (his favorite number, too)
Rodrigo 22,631 m
Peter H 15,000 m (still his favorite number)
Dan 14,067 m
Tom R 10,515 m
Chris 10,127 m (did you just land on this number two rows in a row?!? If so, play music from the Twilight Zone or Groundhog Day)
AJ 8,029 m
Mary 7,213 m
Gina 7,029 m
Ben 4,224 m
Tim S 4,062 m
Tony 3,137 m (new favorite number)
Jan 2,392 m

Fuel supply diminishing? ... say it ain't so!

I've been looking at this map of the Middle East and am appalled at how many countries I can't place (or that I even knew were countries!).

Kona2 - Not to worry! I think it's engine recharge rather than fuel diminish. I predict afterburners will kick in at the start of March Madness.

Paddled 9 miles on the beautiful Blackwater River yesterday with the Western Florida Canoe and Kayak Club. And that's the last paddle on our schedule. The next 3 days we will be briskly cruising north and hope to be home before Wednesday's deteriorating weather. Should be entering meters mid week.

Graphics envy! And, the Middle East geography "game" is somewhat humbling as well - yikes. I think Africa would be tough, too.

Image After reassurances that the fuel supply will hold, we'll all just have to hang on for a bit of a wild row here and there. The Iron Oarsmen may well overtake us today....

Season meters as of 297/365 = 59,755,677 m

So many are so close to a milestone!

TWO Million Meter Watch:

Steven with (567 m) to go! This answers the question of yesterday as to whether or not he would row just a bit more than his very consistent 10K to get to that 2 MM mark.....nope. Perhaps not driven by the milestone itself!

Gina is getting close to entering the one million meter watch.....Image

William H 26,500 m
Rodrigo 25,048 m

Hi All!

My six weeks of following my coaches workout has ended. This consisted of 5 x a week doing the same workout; 30 min hard; 4 min. of 20 sec. on 10 sec. off; 10 min. cool down. Sadly, I didn't see a dramatic effect in my 2k results. I only knoced 1.7 seconds off my baseline from before starting the monotonous workouts.

There is a chance I didn't have much room to drop due to your motivation in the holiday challenge. My baseline time was good to begin with. (I did my test piece on Jan. 11 and had been erging regularly since Nov. 27, so I was in decent erging shape.)

Baseline: 2k in 7:55.8 (1:58.9 split per 500; 208 watts)
post data: 2k in 7:54.1; 1:58.5 split per 500; 210 watts)
I'm happy to be below 8 minutes, but was hoping to drop 3 or 4 seconds after following Nich's workout. Oh well! Now I just have to share my news with him.

On to March Madness and the WRC (formally known as NARC). Krisitne will be signing us up soon. Just like the JVC, each of us needs to confirm that we are participating. So don't forget to sign on. The WRC runs from March 15-April 15. This is the month before I am back on the water, so I'll need your motivation to stay on the erg so that I am in shape for the spring rowing season.

This is what I'm looking forward to--being back on the river. This photo is from the 2008 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA. We didn't medal, but we did get a guaranteed entry for the 2009 race. I am rowing 2 seat. (The second from the bow.)

Thanks again for all the continued support and motivation that you all provide! I'm proud to be a Looney!

Karyn,

Very nice pic! And thanks for the reminder about electing to participate in the challenges. I did sign the team up, so we are ready to go. I am looking forward to it, as I have been slacking off on exercise in order to get my year-end bookkeeping all caught up. One more hard week of chair-sitting, and I should be all done with it.

Hey, Jan, where is your avatar photo? I miss your smiling face!
