Boppers Alert
This might be of interest to those of you who were teenage boppers in the late 50's. This year is the 50th anniversary of the "Day the Music Died". Three days before that tragic plane crash, Buddy Holly and the Crikets, Ritchie Valens, "The Big Bopper" JP Richardson, and Dixon and the Belmonts performed at a Winter Dance Party at the Duluth Armory. At 5PM CST KUWS-FM public radio will air a half hour on Final Edition with some who attended that concert; and between 5:30PM and 6:30PM the station will present 2 half hour spisodes a 50's rock 'n' roll radio show featuring (I believe) a re-inactment of a live broadcast from the Winter Dance Party. I make no guarantees, but this could be fun. Can you row to Peggy Sue?

Thanks for the heads up. I will tune in and sing along...
I saw Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Fats Domino and others in Tacoma in 1958(?). Buddy , the Crickets, and the Everly Brothers were just getting started. A friend of mine won the tickets and we sat in the front row!
I turned my vinyl collection from the '50s-'80s into mp3s and I row to all of the music. The software I use is Polderbits. I also pick up albums at Goodwill for $1 each, and row while recording them. In case you wonder, I was in the stereo business in the '70s.

Re: Boppers Alert
This is cool... Chantilly Lace and Peggy Sue just finished as I start on my first row for the day (11:30am ). Great to think there are maybe others in the team rowing to the same tunes! Thanks for the link Darryl!DuluthMoose wrote:This might be of interest to those of you who were teenage boppers in the late 50's. This year is the 50th anniversary of the "Day the Music Died". Today is the last day for me, so will try to log some big metres (the 600k mark is looking feasible... maybe!).
Row hard everyone!

You know me well Darryl! Yes, I of course would opt for the rowing shell, but I won't give you flak on the guide boat. You're points are valid. I'm thrilled you (Tom) want to take a LTR (learn To Row) course. Ater all these years of erging, you can see how you do on the water. No matter what water endeavor you undertake, safety is important. In a LTR class they should teach you about safety in a rowing shell and how to get back into a boat that flips. In my rowing club we have various classifications for rowers from Novice to Senior. There are many more restrictions on novice rowers such as they can't row when the water is below certain temperatures, they can't go out in a 1x alone, and more. Hopefully the club you get involved in would be safety conscious as well. Either way, have fun with whatever you choose.DuluthMoose wrote:Tom, I hope you do go the on-water route and I'm sure you will find it very enjoyable. And at the risk of catching flak from Gina and Karyn, I'd say guide boat over rowing shell from a safety aspect. I don't think I would ever be entirely safe on the water by myself and without power boat support in a scull. Too many things could go wrong without a life jacket on: catch a crab and flip, rogue wave set and swamp, and then try to do a self rescue for yourself and your rowing shell would be near impossible. It's bad enough just knowing how difficult a self rescue can be with just a canoe; and these things need to be considered when you are on the water alone. A guide boat would be a whole lot safer to be out on the water in whenever you want by your lonesome.tom pinckney wrote:Considering going the on-water route this year. There's classes locally to teach one to row, but I'm thinking guideboat rather than a shell. Regardless, I usually like to do outdoor stuff rather than row indoors when it's warm. Perhaps I'll do both!!

Hi Chris... it was actually a full marathon (#2) today (:shock:I know I said I wouldn't do another...).Just27 wrote:HALF MARATHON:

I was going to do 2 x halfs, however lazybones didn't start till after lunch and I decided if I didn't keep going it was unlikely to happen... that left me on 599,814 metres, so I set up a 184 metre final gasp to hit the 600k mark exactly.
That's me done for the challenge, thanks for the fun and motivation everyone!
(I would have PM'd, however I was stuffed afterwards and had an early evening snooze to recover! )

Nope - no 1/2 marthon for me. I just don't have it in me at this stage. I rowed two, 12,500 sessions not too far apart, but not another 1/2 marathon. Then - more meters later.
I woke up this morning and my hands seemed to be "molded" into the shape of the pulling bar (machine "oars"). My left knee and arm and low back need a rest (tendonitus). A hop in the hot tub (my wife purchased one for me in May) really made a difference. I'm ready to finish up as the day goes by and then lay off a bit.
I'm down to 25,000 to meet my goal and overtrained doing it (indicated by being tired with lower split times). I will finish up over the course of the day as I'm at my max - time for rest before I start cross-training. ME: 600,000 last year - 700,000 this year (and in better shape than I was before I started). 800,000 next year? A marathon in April? Stay tuned!!
I congratulate others that have surpassed me and others that have met their goals. Wondering......have we arrived at the moon yet?

Darryl, I SO didn't believe you, but it's true! I have to synch my day to be done three hours ahead of myself. Thx for the heads-up. (Love the Moose image!)

Thanks Chris - love your work with the cake... you shouldn't have gone to so much trouble! (Although you could have dusted the table better before you plonked the cake on it...)just27 wrote: Happy Birthday, Dave H.

Happy Birthday, Dave!
It looks like I won't be home in time to row today. I didn't realize the cut-off time was EST. Was planning to do my row late tonight as I took the boys skiing today. Oh, well...I was at the end of my physical rope anyways.
It was a good month for all. Well done! And much thanks to the three Stats-Masters.

Congratulations on a well rowed challenge. I was definitely encouraged by the team effort and made it a point to reach the 160K mark on Friday.
What makes this team great is that everyone's participation is valued whether you can squeeze in a 2k or have all day to row a marathon.
Thanks to the statisiticians for keeping us informed and it's onwards to the Valentine's Day Challenge!
