Row Strong, Luna-Tics!

Today's report from Kona2:
I was bait for multiple sand flies today - rotten buggers. Tomorrow we are slated to ride up to 100 miles. Or maybe it was 110. Ridiculous number anyway. There are black swans here at Lake Moeraki (in addition to eels). They view trout as trash fish - guess they just don't have the same water quality, etc., and the fish are tough.

We were able to see the glowworms and Southern Cross last night. Very fun - can't wait to elaborate on both those events. I had laser pointer envy - the guide was shooting the laser at the stars, and given that this is not a populated place....amazing. Simply amazing.

We get back to Denver on the 4th. I can probably ramp back up pretty quickly on the write ups. Good wireless connection here - bad typist!

JVC Daily Record

We are still solidly in fourth place overall this morning! Lets hold on to that!

But either Dan Cox was rowing backward for more than a day’s row for him causing his PM3 (4) to tally in reverse meters, or the Concept 2 folks found the entry error(s) Dan’s been claiming for the last week. So our total meters were 26,470 less than what balances my records, and so is Dan’s total event meters down by that amount according to Concept 2 this morning.

There are 3 more days including today to row in the JVC!
Lets get those personal goals met! Time is becoming short!

Congratulations to the following milestone achievers:

Darryl,

It certainly felt like I was rowing backwards when I hit the delete button. I in fact found the error and corrected it last night. I reaaly hated watching 39,612 meters evaporate into the ether. The problem was a bit complicated, if you want an explanation email me.

Toothdoc: yep - 700,000 is just 3 days away. I originally was shooting for 600,000, but thanks to others like you setting a good example, I decided to up it a bit. Perhaps 800,000 next year?

Have plenty of time to do it (retired 3 years ago), but I'm definitlely somewhat overtrained (muscle sorenesss, tired, joints ache) - but certainly within reach of making the goal. The bride (of 38 years) purchased me a hot tub back in May and I've been in every day. Helps a lot.

When the JVC is over I'll be back to crosstriaing a bit. Last year, I lost about 30 pounds from Thanksgiving to the end of the JVC. This year, I kept the weight off from Thanksgiving to Christmas and then put eight pounds on from Christmas to New Years! Since the JVC started I've taken off the eight pounds (and perhaps one more), so the scale doesn't really show much of a difference. However, I can definitley see the difference in my stomach (smaller) over this period.

Considering going the on-water route this year. There's classes locally to teach one to row, but I'm thinking guideboat rather than a shell. Regardless, I usually like to do outdoor stuff rather than row indoors when it's warm. Perhaps I'll do both!!

Joseph's Spaceship ...

Post by just27 » January 29th, 2009, 12:59 pm

... nice new image on the team page, Joseph. I'm thinking that it's the bridge of a late-model Starship Enterprise? Or, maybe an updated Millennium Falcon ... :) (Or maybe just the drive-thru at Mickey Dee's in Mobile.)

Tom, I hope you do go the on-water route and I'm sure you will find it very enjoyable. And at the risk of catching flak from Gina and Karyn, I'd say guide boat over rowing shell from a safety aspect. I don't think I would ever be entirely safe on the water by myself and without power boat support in a scull. Too many things could go wrong without a life jacket on: catch a crab and flip, rogue wave set and swamp, and then try to do a self rescue for yourself and your rowing shell would be near impossible. It's bad enough just knowing how difficult a self rescue can be with just a canoe; and these things need to be considered when you are on the water alone. A guide boat would be a whole lot safer to be out on the water in whenever you want by your lonesome.

Yep - I may take an on-water class in rowing, but the Guide Boat may be in my plans. Presently, I have two other boats for fishing lakes, but one of them needs a gas motor. I'm up in the air about whether to purchase the motor or a Guide Boat. Both are about the same amount of $$$$.

Congratulations to Kristine on that marathon. Great accomplishment. I've been considering one to finish off the JVC, but not sure if the rear-end will take it!!

Nope, no full marathon...it was two days worth of half marathons. I didn't think I could do it, but I am making my goal of a half marathon every rowing day until the end (since I didn't even start rowing in the JVC until mid-month due to travel.) It's taking all I've got. I'm saving the full marathon for the last rowing day of the season.

Look at you gents and gals go! Way to row! I am quite impressed with all the postings - and have already warned Gina to get her meters in now because I am passing her by in February! Unbelievable numbers you are all posting - almost taking over number six position overall! Most excellent!

Rode bikes in the rain today - tomorrow is Milford Sound weather permitting for the flight there and boat stuff. The group is a well-travelled one ---- but they don't hold a candle to the Luna-Tics!

Row for fun - row for the crazy things we do!

Kristine: two 1/2 marathons is a pretty good accomplishment.

Well....we are down to two days left in the JVC. I'm just getting started rowing for the day. Need 65,000 over the next to days to meet my goal. For me - a lot of meters. I'll have to take it easy (I feel somewhat overtrained). However - I willl make it and then it's a short layoff - then crosstraining begins.

Keep up the good work - Tom
