Peter H,

We opened the Malbec Reserva Sat. night. It was outstanding. Thanks for the heads up. We odered a case for future consumptiom. We also sampled an Aussie Sharaz that was excellant. If anyone is interested in Vintners name let me know.

I gave both a 10.

Post by acrewer » January 27th, 2009, 12:10 am

Poor Kona, while she is off enjoying Summer in NZ, Tom and I snuck up on her and passed her!

Hopefully I can hold on to 24th place through April.

Luni Moony Report

Post by DuluthMoose » January 27th, 2009, 1:38 pm

Luna-Tic Stats for January 26, 2009
brought to you by DuluthMoose, subbing for, but not up to Kona2’s usual high standards….
You’ll have to inform me if you’ve rowed a HM or FM if your meters do not show 21,097 or 42,195.
And you’ll have to prove it to me if you think that I’ve erred.
Otherwise this report is as perfect as I’ll ever get.

Season meters to date = 53,552,074 m!

Total meters for January 25 = 350,552! Way to Row Team!

32 percent of our oars in the water!

Today is the start of the third day of a race for our four legged athlete friends – the John Beargrease Sled Dog Race. It’s about a 400 mile race along the rugged ridge line of Lake Superior to Canada and back to Duluth. It is named after a legendary local Native American, John Beargrease, who would use dog sled and snowshoes to delivery the mail from Duluth to North Shore communities during the winter. He would make the 200 mile round trip several times per week on only a trail back then. And the reason why I bring this up is in the summer (otherwise know as tough sledding season in the northwoods), John Beargrease and his brother would row a rowboat (and sail it if the wind was favorable) on Lake Superior to deliver the mail on the same several round trips per week schedule. That would be about 90k per day in our terms.

Ben says thanks for all the birthday recognition. He really liked the candles in the pie plate, Chris.

Instead of a cake he had a Boomchunka. He is holding off on the cake and party until later on in the year when the weather is nicer outdoors.

Baton Pass

Post by just27 » January 28th, 2009, 2:38 am

GOOD EVENING LUNA-TICS!
(Think Robin Williams saying "Good Morning Vietnam.")

The Duluth Moose has passed the baton after a week of hugely entertaining and motivational team stats and postings. He has also graciously volunteered to finish up the last four-days of JVC hoopla, along with his Field Guide to Water Boats. All this, and mush dogs, too. Thx, Darryl!

I'm not a fan of mornings, so will be starting my shift as The Statster around this time tomorrow ... 10 PM PST (GMT -8). Several team members will have mega-posts, representing a day and a half. Anyone have any HM or FM sessions to report? Marriages, new puppies, nice Zinfandel recommendations? Just send me a PM and I'll duly annotate the team bulletin.

-Dan finished his 95th HM today, Tuesday.
-Tom and Gina tag-teamed a successful offensive on the absent Kona2.
-Jan is climbing glaciers and watching for Russell Crowe.
-Ben has started us on a quest to find a giant Boomchunka.

Onwards to the Moon! And to a glorious finish to the JVC. We've really rowed a bunch of meters this month. Aargh.

Firstly, a big thanks from down under to Darryl for his efforts in keeping a tally on us all in K2's absence!

Okay, time for a translation into Ozglish please.
If left to my own (dubious!) imagination, I would guess a "Boomchunka" was what happens sometime after inbibing far too much alchohol... however given Ben's tender years and (I am sure!) the moral rectitude of the Strasburger clan - I somehow doubt I am in the correct lunar orbit...

Regards,
Dave

Yay, Gina! Most resourceful of LUNA-TICS. You found the exact recipe I used for these delectable morsels. Indeed, Mom ended up eating more of these than anyone else in the family; Dad enjoyed his share with an amazing bottle of Australian Red Wine (since I am not a wine drinker I have not retained the exact type in my brain, but he said it was an amazing pairing); and the boys both enjoyed what few they could get ahold of.

Triple Chocolate Boomchunkas
adapted from Baking: From My Home To Yours by Dorie Greenspan

2 sticks of butter
9 ounces bittersweet chocolate
2 eggs
¾ cup white sugar
¾ cup dark brown sugar
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup cocoa
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
1 cup semisweet chocolate morsels
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1 cup dried cherries

Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment or use a silicone mat.

Place the butter and bittersweet chocolate chunks into a medium sized microwave-safe bowl and microwave on level 7 for 2 minutes. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir the butter and chocolate until they emulsify and come together. Add the brown and white sugars and stir well to combine. Add the eggs and stir well to combine.

Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Add the butter/chocolate mixture to this and stir well to combine. Add the semisweet chocolate morsels, pecans, oats, and cherries. Stir to combine.

Using an ice cream scoop place 6 mounds of dough on the prepared cookie sheet. Each mound should have about 1/3 cup of dough. Using the palm of your hand flatten the mounds out so that they are about 1/2” to ¾” thick and a circle shape. Bake for about 12 minutes in convection oven, 15 minutes in a standard oven. Adjust cook times for your own oven.

Immediately after removing from oven, drizzle a couple of teaspoons of a thin powdered sugar and water glaze over each hot cookie. Cool on cookie sheet several minutes before removing to a wire rack.

Makes about 16 large cookies.
