"Kayrn 21,329 m HM? Or coaches prescribed wind sprints?"
Sorry to fool you. No half marathons for me at the moment, especially not on a weekday. This is actually a 2 day total. I had a busy morning yesterday, so I entered yesterday's workout late and this morning's early.
Thanks for filling in for Jan. Your posts helped me realize that I have almost hit 200k for Jan. and there are still 10 days to go.
Thanks for all the motivation fellow LUNA-tics. Last year I completed 144k in Jan. and I thought that was good. Little did I know how much more you Loonies could push me.

Dave H,
Nice job on the FM. Agreed, doing one feeling fine is one thing, while feeling poorly a different magnitude of difficulty.
I'm trying to screw up the resolve to do #3 before JVC09 is over. 25,000 meters seems to be the wall.
I have declared a body holiday after a short row this AM. I'll be back Fri. PM.

Thanks Darryl, Dan and Chris. I don't know about bragging rights, it was the last 10,000 metres that seemed to go on forever! I didn't feel too bad through most of the session, so apart from slowing me down a bit (more! ) it wasn't a big impact - it has been worse in the 2 days since...just27 wrote: Congratulations on your first full marathon, Dave! I'm not at all sure that I ever want to repeat the performance, but I believe that "bragging rights" go on forever. Good on ya.
Just got word that I have the second last Marathon Mug in OZ! Makes it all worth while!
Sorry Chris, I wasn't sure if it was the gnashing of teeth I heard or just the tectonic plates moving...just27 wrote:(However .... it was somewhat demoralizing to pull ahead of you that night, only to find myself 30K behind again the next morning! Did you hear my teeth gnashing?)
I have given you another full day to catch up now, so no excuses!
Cheers,
Dave

Karyn you are closer than you think to that 200K. I compared all team members meters to the JVC individual stats after I finished tweaking Kona2's spreadsheet this evening. I found a discrepancy between my reported meters for you today and what the JVC record is showing and just edited today's report to reflect that. So you officially now show 199,221 meters for the JVC (about 8K more). Darrylkgallagher wrote: Your posts helped me realize that I have almost hit 200k for Jan. and there are still 10 days to go.

Re: Daily Stats
I got so caught up in my two day total that I guess I didn't scroll to the bottom of the page. How on earth did I miss this picture? For those who don't know, this ship is a trireme (3- tiers of rowers) and was used in Greece around the 5th century b.c.) I thought you all might like to know that back in 1992 I rowed in a triereme replica "Olympias" in Greece as part of a live arceological study. We were testing the boat to see if we could replicate the speed and moves as were indicated in written depictions from the time.
Thanks for posting this image. You just brought back many wonderful memories.

A MINNESOTA POEM
It's winter in MINNESOTA
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below.
Oh, how I love MINNESOTA
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave MINNESOTA
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground!

Karyn - Don't commit yourself yet, you aren't going nuts. There was at least a hour between when I posted the daily stats and when I came back to edit the file and include what I think is a neat picture of a trireme. Kona left me with her photobucket access privileges and told me to have fun. (We may both regret this Kona2)
Anyway it is so so cool Kayrn that you have actually been part of a crew on a replica trireme! How fast could you get this puppy going? How many oarsmen? What cadence (strokes per minute) did you row this vessel at? And how in the world did 3 decks of oarsmen stay in synch? This vessel looks like it has the potential to break out a mini war between oarsmen.....

Are you and Chris splitting the duties this time around?
Thanks! The way I look at it, if you don't have the smoothness and finese talents like Kona2 and 27, try brute Moose force and something's bound to happen! But the outcome may not always be quite what was expected... And it helps to look at spreadsheets and report templates as complex Sudoku puzzles.
The plan is: I'm the guy thru next Tuesday, then it's 27's show until Kona2 gets back!

I'm so glad I'm not going crazy. The boat holds 170 rowers. Our goal was to sprint at over 9 knots. I don't think we achieved 9. (We only had a crew of 160, maybe that was why?) I'm afraid I don't remember our strokes per minute. It was a lower cadence that was maintained by a drum beat or a whistle. When we were on our four day journey around Greece only the top two tiers rowed as the water was rough, so the thalamian oars were underwater. We had success with some of our trials (simulating different battle manoeuvers) but not all. I am including a bunch of pictures. Hopefully they will help you understand the life of an Ancient Greek male (yes, only the males rowed). By the way, they weren't slaves, just about all men were needed to man these ships.Karen - that is so cool, how may rowers are in the trireme? Were you successful in the testing? What tier did you row? I imagine it's nicer being on the top deck
This is the Olympias I rowed in.
This is the ram. Supposedly they used to go "Ramming speed" into another boat and quickly start rowing backwards causing the other boat to sink. It was hard to row full force, stop, and quickly start rowing backwards. (To think, we were doing it without actually hitting another boat. I can't imagine ramming a boat and backing out.)
This is a mock-up that we used to learn to row in NY before heading to Greece. There I am in the middle row.
Here's what it looked like inside the Olympias. Yes, those are rowers in the bottom of the hull. I was one of the thalamians. Generally the smaller rowers were down here. It was a tight squeeze.
Thanks for allowing me to reminisce.
Karyn
not sure how to get this picture to post here, but I saw this and thought it would be appropriate to share..

Re: Daily Stats
In light of this new info, do you guys think the daily team stats should be listing anyone who does 21097 - 42193 meters on a day in the half moon area, and anyone who does 42194 or more meters on a day in the full moon area?Toothdoc wrote:
Just a technical note for all you Loons. I checked with C2 and you don't to start your row with the HM or FM meters showing on your monitor and then row till it reaches zero to count. You may also row a bunch of different pieces at the same workout session and as long as they total a HM or a FM and you added all the times plus the time you were off the erg and that also counts.
Dan C
For our purposes, since we are taking a once a day snapshot of meters entered, and we are not concerned with times, and what we post here is unofficial, I think we should be recognizing the daily meters a person has added to the team, but also recognizing the Full-Moon and Half-Moon numbers for those rowing at least that much, even if they did not record an official full or half time in their logbooks.
As it is, a person could be rowing a half-marathon, and then doing a cool down, or just doing more meters, and the stats person has no way to know whether the person recorded a half-marathon and then the additional meters in their logbook, or whether they recorded one single long row, or whether they recorded several shorter rows, and didn't do a half or full m. time at all.
Occasionally, a person's meters for several days show up as a single meter increase due to the time of day they entered their meters, or due to entering meters in batches, but that doesn't seem to happen very often.
What do you guys think about this? Is this a good idea or a bad idea? I don't want to complicate things, so it might be a good idea to get K2's input on it since she is the one doing most of the stats-keeping, but I want to know how you who read the forum feel about it, too.
