Does anyone here use the Livestrong.com website for managing calories consumed and burned? I signed up for the free service in part because they had a nice iphone sync application, which made it easy to keep a log of what I ate.
However, I'm finding much of the information about exercise and calorie burn questionable. In general, the calorie burn credits they give for most exercises seem far too generous.
And the information on rowing recommends that to "row vigorously" and lose the most weight, you should aim for rowing at 35-40 spm! I'm pretty new to rowing, but that seems like bad advice that would simply encourage really bad form.

That depends on what sort of rowing they were referring to. For either a sliding seat boat with the oars mounted on outriggers or to the Concept2 indoor rowers (or similar makes), 35-40 would be considered a racing pace, not an exercise pace for most people. But, if they meant an ordinary rowboat, or a different type of indoor rowing machine, that stroke rate might be fine.And the information on rowing recommends that to "row vigorously" and lose the most weight, you should aim for rowing at 35-40 spm! I've recently started using this site and really love it. I had the same issues with using the default numbers of calories burned for the different exercises. Now I simply enter my number of calories burned manually to get an accurate amount (I get this number from RowPro). Overall, I am finding the site to be really helpful as I track what food I put in my body.
