It's on an island in Brent Lake about 2 miles from the west end where it leads into the Darkwater River. No lake trout in the lake for supper there, but I promise there will be walleye frying! The next 5 pictures are at that campsite. There's plenty of room at the campfire!

Chris: I'm not really fond of brussel sprouts, but will eat them if I have to.... I had some for Christmas dinner and they were sauteed with oil and slivered almonds. The almonds made them taste a little better than usual.

Darryl: Thanks for the invitation. I will definitely stop by. Likely much later than you, Dan and Chris...
Chris: I will definitely pick some Brussel sprouts from you on my way to the next camp site. Sorin found on the web a recipe with lemon juice. We loved it. I will send it if we are able to find it again ;).

Happy rowing (and eating, if we row enough ;))!

New LUNAtic

Post by voodoogirl » January 5th, 2009, 11:39 am

Hey everyone! I'm new to the team and just wanted to say hi and Happy New Year and that I finally got over my unfortunate new year's migraine and managed to eke out 1000m last night--fairly pitiful but at least I got on the erg! I'm hoping to contribute 150,000 to our team this month if all goes well.

I'm not a huge brussels sprouts fan but my husband adores them and we both love trout. I AM a huge farmer's market fan, however, and have to say that every vegetable I've ever gotten at one has been far better than expected. My husband Josh and I just moved to NE Iowa and there seem to be an abundance of farmer's markets here (once the ice and snow go away, that is!)--I'll make a note to try the sprouts this summer. I may become a convert....

Happy rowing, everyone!

Welcome Laurie

Post by Kona2 » January 5th, 2009, 12:25 pm

Glad you joined the team, Laurie!

We do need for you to go to your logbook and select Luna-Tics under the team heading in order to be part of the JVC Luna-Tic Challenge Team. You are definitely on the year round team - each team member just has to select that s/he will participate in a challenge! All meters help and when you do select participation, we can count the meters you put in yesterday! Otherwise, they do count towards the team's totals, but not the JVC challenge.

Hi, Laurie ... I absolutely have to ask about your team name ... are you a computer programmer ... an Aerosmith fan ... a supersonic military fighter pilot ... or did you just move to NE Iowa from a small village in Haiti ... !?

naming things

Post by voodoogirl » January 5th, 2009, 1:14 pm

You mean "voodoogirl"? Ah....pretty simple really---I've had my own freelance writing business for about 8 years now and named IT "Voodoo Communications"--given that writing seems to involve magic, or magical thinking at least, or some sort of other worldly intervention, much of the time. So the voodoo piece carries over into a lot of other things....Yes I do have a small collection of Voodoo dolls.

I moved from just outside Washington, DC, to Iowa--"voodoo" anything in DC also seems too often far too appropriate! :D Interestingly, the Waterloo Center for the Arts has the largest Haitian art collection in the world. It's pretty cool.

I thought seriously about claiming to be a fighter pilot. That would be cool. But I'm not sure how long I could keep up the deception....

Chris,

You may have met your match (Laurie) or at least your equal in the mastery of the English language, esoteric miscellany and spinning a yarn.

I've never been able to handle you. Guess now I'm going to have to double check all my submissions and get a second decoder ring.

Jan,

Looks like you need to do some spring cleaning on your photobucket account, or kick out some dough. You are in the red zone!

I think I have fixed photobucket issue. Apparently you all got a message that I could not see about bandwidth exceeded or something. The only red zone I want to be in is the closing in on million meters red zone!

Congrats to Tom P, Will S and Dan C for joining William H (Wild Bill!) in the 100K plus club for the JVC. All that in five days! And Chris is within striking distance today of same.

Hi fellow Luna-Tics!

Thought I should say g'day on behalf of any Aussies in the team (are there any others doing the JVC?).
Just past midday on the 6th here in Sydney, and out in the west we are heading for 41 degrees (C) this afternoon. I am sure it has contributed to the slowest half marathon time I have ever pulled  (couldn't stop often enough to drink and stretch... particularly over the last 10k's  ) - however I got there. I love this challenge and enjoy pushing the team's tally along each day, it is such a great thing to do after the indulgent season just finished!
Hope to crack the 100k later tonight, and goal is 500k for the challenge, allthough that gets a whole lot tougher when I go back to work next week... :(

Enjoy the vibe of the team - keep up the hard work everyone!
Dave

DuluthMoose,

Wow! That campsite looks amazing. I wished I stopped by myself, maybe next time I'm rowing by I'll pop in to say hi. I scrolled through a bunch of the pictures. I like the wall paintings. Any idea if those are ancient or a modern day attempt to recreate the past? I don't know if I could join you for the fish. I'm a vegetarian and don't eat much fish, but that did look like it might be worthwhile to at least take a bite. I'll pass on the brussel sprouts (ICK !) but if my hubby is on the trip with me, he'll eat my share. They're one of his favorite veggies.

Hiya Voodoogirl Laurie! Welcome to the team. I'm glad your migraine is gone and hopefully that was the only one you'll have for 2009. Whether you row 1m or multimillions, we are happy to have you on board. It's a long way to the moon and we appreciate all the help we get.

Pictographs

Post by DuluthMoose » January 5th, 2009, 11:32 pm

Karyrn - The wall paintings are fine examples of the many pictograph sites in the Quetico by the native people, the Ojibwe. They are estimated to be 150 to 500 years old. Almost all are on cliff faces 2 to 6 feet above the water level and many times the artist would be using a canoe as the platform to work from. This group was on Darkwater Lake, 73 kilometers into this trip. Here is the link to two photos I took of this group.
http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2154 ... t=outdoors
Of particular interest in the second photo along the bottom is the horned water beast with the canoes riding on top of it. I think this is kind of a warning of having to cross large open area of water ahead where the waves can really kick up.
Here is another link to some information about the Queticio pictographs.
http://www.queticofoundation.org/pictographs.html
And your local library may have a copy of the book "Magic on the Rocks" by Michael Furtman which describes all the known pictograph sites in the Boundary Waters / Quetico region.
