olaf tufte oars

All the photos I have seen of Olaf Tufte in 2008 show the collars on his oars very close to the end of the sleeves. Does this mean that he is using a very short inboard, very short oars, or something else?

Being a huge and immensely strong person he probably uses very long blades to get the maximum speed. This means his grip will be as far out as possible meaning the collar being close to the end of the sleeve doesn't have a huge effect.
