Thanks, Kap'n K !

The numeric sequencing continues with variations on the theme! Tony started this with his 7777s, and now we're all having some fun with our countdowns or ups.

Season meters as of 192/365 = 31,176,487 m

Total meters on the day = 99,344 m

Oars in the water = 13 percent

MILESTONES:

One Million Meter Watch: Red Zone!!!

Rodrigo with (19,331 m) to go!

William H with (40,630 m) to go! And, can you tell that this guy is ready to reach that 1 MM mark....take a look at this week's chart for WH:

Image

Elsewhere on the planet, our lunar mission continues! A strange numeric sequencing "virus" is spreading from team member to team member...doesn't appear harmful:

Dan C 22,222 m  (with 23,456 m) to 9 MM lifetime!
William H 16,950 m
Darryl 14,611 m (getting closer to that personal best level)
Chris 14,567 m (    /      /       /        :!: )
Mary 10,071 m
AJ 8,146 m
Tony 7,777 m :D (numeric sequencer extraordinaire!)
Peter G 5,000 m

To the nines!

Post by Kona2 » November 9th, 2008, 11:29 pm

2 the 99999999999999s

Ever wonder where the phrase "to the nines" comes from? I can't find anything that's definitive, but here's my favorite one thus far:

"The nine" or "the nines" were used to signify "superlative" in numerous other contexts.
Theories include: 9, being the highest single-digit number, symbolized the best; a metanalysis of Old English to then eyne "to the eyes"; and a reference to the 9 muses. (from Mark Israel and alternative english usage website).

Why is this important today?

Dan C's crossed into The Nines of course! Congratulations on reaching NINE million meters, Dan!

Congrats, Dan ... it was only 15 minutes ago that you posted a screenshot of your 5 million moment!

... building on "Why Do We Say That" ... another alternate for the phrase "dressed to the nines": The commonest type of large sailing ship of the nineteenth century was the square rigger with three main masts, each with three "yards" or "yardarms". The sails were hung from the yards, so when the ship was fully rigged each of the nine yards held a sail. The vessel was then said to be fully dressed. Dressed to the nines, then, means all dressed up!
