Cleaning out the fan

Post by ThatMoos3Guy » October 23rd, 2008, 1:23 am

What benefits does cleaning out the fan/fly wheel of an erg have? How often should one do this? And how does one go about doing this? Thank you for your help!

When the fan has accumulated dust and lint, the force pull needed at a given vent setting becomes much lower (pulls easier). To see this, pull as you usually do, and then on the next pull have some one place a piece of cloth on the side of the fan cage.

To clean, just remove the right side fan cover and vacuum it out.

It's more effective to get the PM2/PM3/PM4 to measure drag factor.

On a PM2 remove the HR interface (if fitted), press [1/0] to turn on the monitor, then press [OK]+[REST] together. Row six or seven big strokes until a number appears in the bottom right of the monitor (annotated with "drag").

On a PM3/PM4 from the main menu choose More Options then Display Drag Factor.

The drag factor should range between about 95 (damper 1) and 220 (damper 10) on a clean machine.
