You guys are funny!
Hey, anyone using the New Grips... I see that the company offers the pad with wrist supports, and the pad without the wrist supports. Is the wrist support necessary for rowing? I never have trouble with pain in my wrists. My main problem is calluses building up on my palms and fingers, and the accompanying discomfort from that. Do the wrist supports help in rowing, or are they more of an obstacle to work around?

I use those gloves and they work very well. I got the wrist strap model. They do take a little getting used to.

Get the wrist supports
Ahoy there captain Kristine! Go for the gloves with wrist supports - the New Grip gloves feel quite funky at first. There is a definite reduction in callus formation on fingers and palms. Most of us swear by them after using them (thanks to Pat M of Timbuktoo for showing us the way). The wrist supports also help you keep the correct angle on the rowing handle. They attach by velcro to the hand pad which only has a loose elastic strap that fits over your fingers. I think it would be difficult to row without the wrist supports as the pad would be sliding all over the place.
Once you set the wrist support size, you can just slip the gloves off and on pretty easily. Over time, the hand pads would need to be replaced (hence the replacement pads), but you shouldn't have to replace the wrist supports nearly as often.

Re: Get the wrist supports
I like the New Grips but only use them when I start feeling hot spots on my hands (e.g. half-way through a HM). I have noticed that when I wear them for longer than an hour or so, my fingers are stiff the next day.Kona2 wrote:Ahoy there captain Kristine! I had callouses on my ring and middle finger joints, but in the past couple of months they've gone away. (My working theory is that, in sandal weather, I use a pumice stone on my heels each morning in the shower ... and probably roll the pumice stone around in my hands ... maybe that's smoothing out the callouses!)

Re: All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 6.30.08
And I won't be rowing for a while:
I'm in the final hours of packing for a 9 day wilderness canoe trip and I don't expect to be rowing for 2 weeks. Tomorrow afternoon I pick up 2 of my crew at the airport, we have our last civilized supper of pizza for a while, and we go through a gear shake down with everyone to discard the duplicates and make sure we have everything we need. Hope to be leaving for Ely, MN at 6 AM on Thursday. Darryl[/quote]
thanks and have a great time......looking forward to reading about it...also hope that there will be pictures too....barbara

The 2% that really matters....
There's a year long leadership program that originated in Denver called Influence (originated by G. Browning**). One of the ideas behind it is that of all the things we do in our lives, two percent is what is truly important to us....you then have a project for the year that is based upon something that is "your two percent". This is usually something that is way deep in your heart and soul...something you've yet to conquer or complete...that will, perhaps, result in a breakthrough for you as a person.
** Google Emergenetics
Row to Beijing: Team has contributed 54,320 challenge meters (10 actual meters = 1 challenge meter) or 0.88 percent of the total challenge meters!! So, given that rowing and our community here seems to be pretty important to us, do you think we're capable of 2 percent??

Congrats to all you guys. There seems to be so much going in its hard to keep up. My house sold in a week and I got what I wanted for it. Found the right people at the right time. All the inspections are done and I close on the 25th of July. I start in AZ on the 18th of August. Busy busy busy. I hope to hit my 2M mark before I leave. My membership at the Y runs out at the end of the month. Obviously when I get settled in AZ the thing to do is to get my own erg. See ya all in China. Then... TO THE MOON!!!
