Back Pain!

Post by ckaiserca » June 24th, 2008, 7:24 pm

I woke up yesterday with just a bit of a twinge in my right upper back. This was below the shoulder blade along the length of the long muscles of the back. As I was sitting on my bed and pulling on my socks, I was suddenly struck with a pain unlike any I have felt before! I had to roll onto my side, and it took me nearly 15 minutes before I could get off the bed, and then maybe 5 or so minutes before I could stand up straight.

I was pretty much in pain all day yesterday, but I figured that I would see what my mobility was. I got on my D and I was able to do the full range of a stoke with no problem at all. I slowly worked up to a 30 spm rate, and rowed 10k with no pain at all. None. But as soon as I got off the erg and tried normal ranges of movement, the pain was back.

Same story today. Lots of pain in my back while doing normal tasks, but none while rowing at all.

Any thoughts?

My story is similar to yours...no pain while rowing, but pain between my shoulder blades and/or upper neck would come and go.

It turns out I have a posture problem - probably caused by spending 12 hours a day in front of a computer and my slowly increasing weight - largely around my belly. I am 6' 3" and I was 235 lbs when it started - similar to your stature I think. Well, I am now 215 lbs and my belly has shrunk and with a little self physio the pain has almost gone.

Try sitting upright in a chair, out stretch one arm, then bend the elbow and place your palm hard against your chin - and push for 10-15 seconds. Repeat as necessary. That would give me some instant relief.

I hope that helps, but of course, your pain may well be something different.
