RE: the map - we can certainly try the photo! Some of the cities (i.e. Spirit Lake) already had a connected photo - and I didn't take time to figure out how to disconnect it. So let's see what happens!

OK gang here is my big chance to find out what rowing is all about and maybe where I fit in. The Duluth Rowing Club is sponsoring 3 sessions of beginners course on the fundamentals of rowing. For $75 you get 4 evening sessions on a trainer (Concept II and what a thrill that will be!) and a catamaran rower on the water for 16 rooky rowers. The following week you row for 4 evening session on the real thing on the water. The fee can be applied to joining the club after the course, if I decide its something I want to do for the rest of the summer. I'm leaning toward signing up, but am wondering what kind of time commitment am I getting myself into!!! Guess I'll sleep on it for a few nights.

DM - sounds like a deal to me. Rowing lessons (4 sessions) in LA cost $200 or more! Club membership is in the 000's. But a catamaran rower? come on, part of the fun is learning what to do when you flip. Note I said when, not if.

I learned to scull in a wherry, a bit wider than a single and and not as tippy. But when you feel the speed of a single, wow.

Andrea - great article! and good training ideas for us to lower our 2K times. I really like what it said about working on technique. Even on the erg, technique matters. It's much easier to add speed if you have good technique than to fix technique problems when you are used to rowing 30 strokes/min.

Dan and Gina - Thanks for the info on the cost of rowing lessons in your areas. After thinking this over I'm signing up and the class is suppose to start 6/16. I think I can get my $75 worth of entertainment out of this and maybe even get some tips for better rowing on the Concept.

Andrea - Thanks for the interesting link. I think I'm going to have to read this one a few times in the next couple weeks.

AJ - Got your comment on the river photo I posted. This photo is on the same river (St Francis) with the close encounter with the limbo tree, but 2 days earlier than that encounter and about 4 miles downstream from there. That tree was on a very popular stretch of the St Francis to float; suitable for beginners, with the take-out in the popular Sam Baker State Park. No doubt the floods in April caused the obstruction, but it seems strange no one had cleared that tree yet. If its not out of there yet, I bet a lot of folks went for a swim there over Memorial Day weekend.

How ironic that our canoe guy should be the one to get many of us to finally check out the "Learn to Row" classes offered in our various areas! (Boulder Community Rowing is a non-profit group that offers weekend sessions of Learn to Row for $150 - I am thinking of giving it a whirl.)

Question for the team: Darryl suggested that we should have an archive where we keep some of the technical articles, advice, etc. Andrea's article would be a good one to add. It would also be a good place to post the links to photos and artwork (AJ and Darryl, e.g.). We can post a separate topic on the forum in the team section. What should we call it? Maybe the Looney Bin?
