Yep! That's the idea. Finish off the last day of the season with the last meters for the million, and make it a marathon. I've been trying to work up to it mentally since the NARC ended, and I got back on the rower. It is one of those things that I can't help doing even though I know it is gonna hurt (not unlike the running marathons).

So, how do you prepare for a marathon? Given a chunk of time, I can do a half marathon (relatively) comfortably. I figured that after consistently doing 10k a day, a HM was an option ... but I can't get my head around a full marathon. On what does one base the possibility ... and how much is too much to attempt?

Also ... my rings are getting tighter ... what's that about!? (Maybe too many salted pistachios ... :( )

Now I see that the 1/2 marathon is listed as 21,097 :(.
I hope they'll count it though, as I cannot see myself doing another one by April 30...
I should have looked on the list, but I checked Google and found:
1 half marathon = 21 097.494 meters
To be sure, I entered the distance as 21,098...

No I have about 11k to my first 1M.

Happy rowing!

Andrea
P.S. Yes, chocolate is one reason I row. The other one: ice cream :)
Andrea,

I emailed C2 about 2 weeks ago to ask if you rowed more than a HM ro a FM would you get credit. Their reply was the computer would only pick it up if the exact meters were entered. Their solution was to delete the entry and reenter as two rows one with the exact meters and the 2nd with what ever was left over.

Hope this helps.

It's probably not the nuts but the adult beverage to wash down. Solutiion, take the rings off.

Chris, I have to agree with you the HM isn't too bad but I am just ready to get off the rower after 90 minutes. Just can't imagine sittting there for another 90.
Also I want call a truce after Wednesday; I am ready to back off for awhile and start mixing up the training. My rows have begun to plateau over the last few weeks. As a peace offering I will bring double fudge chocolate brownies to the Lunatics Pot luck. What do you think? As for your rings I won't add any nuts to the brownies.

Uh huh, Dan and Tim, you guys are both so empathetic! Note, I wasn't suggesting that my jeans are getting tighter, just my rings! Surely I am building up massive finger muscles/tendons, clutching that C-2 bar ... (But, I'll buy next week's pistachios, unsalted. :( )

Tim - truce accepted. Tonight's the end of my season ... gotta host a dinner party chez moi tomorrow. (Anyways, I think Peter is going to be the challenger now, not me!) Also, the pool is just about warm enough to start swimming again. Joy!

Thanks Dan,

I also wrote them and they suggested to edit the log entry to 21,097 meters, which I did. I did not adjust the time for the additional 1m, though so likely I can improve my PB next time ;).
From now on I'll remember that the half marathon is 21,097m :).

I am planning to row a little today and finish my 1st lifetime 1M during the last day's "party." And I'll have some chocolate and ice cream ready for the potluck celebration!

Happy rowing!

My wrist is doing better and I'll row tomorrow. If I feel good I might make it to a 1/5 marathon (8439) or maybe I'll just partake of a 5th of something!

4/30 is also 31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins. So might I suggest we enjoy a cyber scoop of Jamoca Almond Fudge or whatever is your preferred flavor! My son likes Wild N' Reckless, which at times describes my rowing!

Ok, it's April 30 (well, 9PM on the West Coast, but the online log indicates the 30th).

All oars in the water...

Ready all, ROW!!

The only way I can complete a marathon row is to:

#1 - have a good long movie series to watch (I always gravitate towards the three Lord of the Rings movies because there is a lot of action and good music, and I am familiar with them.)

#2 - row the first 45 minutes or so, and then get off the rower for a stretch break about every 30 minutes for the rest of the marathon. The key here is to not wait until I start hurting to take the break. I just go by the clock. Towards the end I might start getting off every 15 or 10 minutes if I have to in order to make it to the end (sometimes the leg muscles are wanting to cramp, so am trying to baby them along to the end.)

#3 - have something yummy (and carbohydrate) to snack on during the stretch breaks. Just a bite or two of a treat is helpful to be able to look forward to for going just another 30 minutes, and it keeps the energy level up. Don't wait until you are crashing to take your first snack or you will regret it. And keep drinking water or juice during the breaks.

#4 - pace a moderate rowing pace. I never try to beat a certain time. This is all about endurance, and keeping the body going for the duration.

#5 - Just accept the fact that this is going to hurt, and do it anyways. Every time I swear I will never do it again - especially after the first one - but then another year passes and I forget how bad it felt, and I do it again.

My first marathon row took me 4 hrs. 31 minutes. The next one took 4 hrs. 16 minutes. Last year's took me 3 hrs. 49 minutes. These times are slow. I am always ranking last or second to last in my group; probably because of all the stretch breaks I take, but that is the only way I can do it and still go about my day afterwards.

Nobody should feel bad about cutting back on rowing as the summer approaches and the weather gets nicer. Most every one of us has other interests and activities that we like to do instead of rowing during the summer months.

Just because you are not rowing does not mean you can't keep an eye on the forum and post here in the Team Room. It would be fun to keep up with the relationships through the "off-season".
