Rowing with a gut

I am 5'11" and 240lbs. I rowed in college when i was in better shape, so i think my technique is pretty well engrained into my mind by now.
But, i find that rowing with a gut is strange: i tend to split my knees apart just to get a longer reach, and i don't think it's good. I used to be a sweep rower, so i am kinda used to moving my legs apart and putting my hands between the knees when i was reaching, but i know i am not suppose to do that on the erg.
What are the things that an obese person, such as myself, should keep in mind in terms of technique? I don't want to develop any bad habits.
