Except that it takes energy to walk on the flat as well! Depends on air resistance while the calories keeping you upright may not be the same from recovery on the erg. I would stick to the estimates above!

That's what the fudge is for. To account for it any other way will need some other estimate system.

Yes, very difficult to calculate it accurately but I think my estimate of doubling the calorie expenditure thus halving the time is not too far off the mark.
6 months ago I decided I needed to do something about my weight - I replaced my daily lunchtime gorgefest with a one hour walk and estimated a net 1000 calorie daily change, equating to roughly 2 lbs a week.
Over the last 26 weeks I have lost 53 lbs so my very rough calculations have turned out to be not too far off the mark.

Well done indeed. Walking is as good as any other exercise and can certainly shift plenty of heat, if we take the time to get used to it so that we can go the distance with some speed. I've found using sticks helps a lot too, especially on hills.

Maybe HR can serve to give a reference as to intensity.
