Evening all!

I appreciate the advice. I have read the information - thanks.

Not to go against your advice but I want to empirically validate. I may even regress the data to see what is my best bang for buck.

Tonight's 5,000m was at damper 2. Set a new PB: 22m25.5s. c.20 seconds faster than at damper 10.

Thursday is damper setting 3.

Forget the damper setting. Go into the monitors menu and bring up display drag factor and pull some strokes until you see a reading of around 115-125 drag. That is where you need to be for your rowing!!!

Good, well done. Imo you should keep doing what you're doing and find what works for you. It is very interesting that you have set a new PB on a much lower drag factor.

Hi all!

I cannot wait to get on the rower tonight. Any one else get that feeling? Probably still the novelty of it all for me...!

I'm so intrigued to see how my little experiment will play out. Damper setting 3 tonight.

Assuming I do my 5,000 meters tonight that'll be 21,000m in my first week! Get me!

To save on time why don't you row 1k on damper 3; 1k on damper 4 etc for the 5k that you're doing? You will soon get a good feel for what feels right.

Nice call! I wish I thought of that before. Changing now will mess up my sample size.

So.... tonight was interesting. I was too excited to jump on the rower and worked out too soon after eating. I could have easily renamed my rower to the vomit comet! I was sure I wasn't going to finish either. But alas, a PB!

5,000m. Damper 3. 22m02.1s.

Saturday is Damper 4.

Make sure you are recording the average drag factor for each setting also. If you ever use a fitness center or someone else's machine you will need that info to dial in the same spot as the Damper setting is different for every machine.

If the workout is recorded with Ergdata on your phone and uploaded to https://log.concept2.com/ you can't avoid recording the drag factor.

Have you considered that your fitness and technique is evolving during all these tests?

So when you have done all 10 damper settings you will end up with a curve, which partly shows the effect of damper settings and partly shows your fitness trend over time.

You could to some extent mitigate this by picking a random damper setting for each session.

Do a set of six 500m intervals on a two min rest. Start with the drag set to 100 then 120 then 140 (don't use the damper lever position). For number four set it back to 110, then 130 & 150.

Assuming you're warmed up, you should eliminate some of the variability, although by rep #6 you will be more tired.

Then set the drag to 120 and leave it there for the rest of eternity.

Hi all!

Thanks for all your replies. So i'm half way through my experiment.

Another 5,000m. Damper 4.

Another PB: 21m30.9s.

I feel like my technique is improving. Focus tonight was maintaining a straight back. Tomorrow will be maintaining a straight back but also trying to maintain a consistent pull. My pull - not sure of the right term - varies in strength each time and I noted the project finish time varies.

Sam, the projected finish (time, or distance, depending on what type of workout you're doing) is indeed sensitive to the force of each stroke (until you get near the end, when the distance or time remaining is too small to have a big impact). However, the simplest (and IMO best) way to gauge the power of each stroke is to watch the near real time display of pace (or power). The projected finish is affected by too many other factors to be a good measure of how much you're putting into each stroke. It is useful for other stuff, but IMO immediate assessment of each stroke is not one of them.

Thanks Ombrax.
I'll have a snoop on the forum around projected finish times to see how it's effected.

Hi all!

This is my focus tonight.

As I understand it, basically, you use your arms when your legs are locked.

Would someone mind watching my form on insta?
