Howdy doody!

Post by Batandball » August 13th, 2013, 7:17 am

Brand new, 43 years old, 5' 4" and 14st 7lbs. Gp tells I won't see 50 unless I sort out my diet, exercise, shift work and stress! I think that's an excellent reason to start rowing!

I watched a C4 program years ago called Fit Farm? Or something like that, a guy on there lost over 4stone. That's about what I need to do, so a model d now sits in my spare room.

After watching all the youtube vids on technique, I have just completed my first work out. Warm up an 2x 10 min at ut2 I think. Warm, breathing harder but still able to chat to wife. Now stretched, cooled down and refuelled. Feeling quite hopeful too, after all my life depends on it!

Any help or tips etc will be graciously received!

Cheers

Paul :D

Since you give your weight in stones, you should probably also post on this forum:

http://therowingcompany.com/forum/

That is the current URL for the UK C2 forum.

I also wanted to post this general message for new erg users, but there is a limit of 3 URLs. Since this already has three and I put one in that first message, I had to break them up.

Well, anyway, here are some tips:

To start with, it helps to know some of the jargon. This is a bit out-dated, but still useful:

http://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=38

Next, learn about the damper setting and the drag factor:

http://www.concept2.co.uk/indoor-rowers ... etting-101
(Note that there is one error there. The lowest damper setting is not 1, it can be moved to one mark below that to an unlabelled zero.)

Finally, work on technique and keep at it indefinitely. There are many good videos around and this is one of the best:

Even better is to get advice from a competent rowing coach (not a fitness center instructor, although there are some out there that know about rowing). Failing that, have a side view video made of yourself on the erg and send it to this forum for a critique.

Slow and steady, don't overdo it. But be persistent and regular in your training.
