Can I download 'drag factor', 'drive length' of my work out?

Post by billyanaire » July 2nd, 2024, 5:39 am

Hi, I am a newbie of concept2 rowing. Recently I knew that I can download my workout data by CSV file. but, there was no drag factor and drive length in the file. I'd like to know each stroke's drive length and drag factor, can I download them too? While using app with my phone, I can check my other data but I can't find them in my log book. If leave comment how to do it, I would really appreciate. Thank you!

Dragfactor only varies slightly across strokes due to measurement noise, so there actually is no reason to record it on a per stroke basis.

Drivelength can vary from stroke to stroke, and it is reported via bluetooth. You can register it using tools like PainSled and export it to csv.

You can download Drag Factor.

Goto your log, click "all history" which is near Latest Workouts. All history will let you download an entire season in CSV format. You do not get per stroke data, instead you get a summary of each workout that includes drag factor.

If you row in a garage that gets cold in the winter and if you don't ever change your damper setting with a years history you can see DF get higher with denser cold air and lower with warmer air.

FWIW unless you are into PR'ing 100m rows, you probably just want to let your DF sit at a comfortable low number in the range 100-120.

Drive Length can be computed from the data captured in the Ergdata CSV.

The per stroke CSV includes a distance field incremented every stroke. Subtracting two consecutive distances gives you the drive length for that stroke.

Assuming your erdata CSV data is in a spreadsheet, you can create a new column "Drive Length" where the value is computed by subtracting the current rows "distance" value from the next rows 'distance field'. The formula will look something like =C4-C3 where the distance values are in column C and the "drive length" cell getting the formula is in row 3.

That is "stroke length": the distance the boat moves per stroke. And you can calculate it the way you described but it is quite inaccurate due to rounding issues.

Drive length is the length of the drive, i.e. the travel of the handle during the drive. A PM5 can calculate it as it knows the angular displacement during the drive and the cog size. And it is reported via Bluetooth. It is displayed but not registered by ErgData. You need third-party apps to register it.

No problem, these terms are too similarly named to be easily distinguished. When I worked on the dataset for OpenRowingMonitor to RowsAndAll interface, I had to dive in their definitions and methods of calculation. But for normal rowers I really understand the confusion. When you look at the numbers, drivelength typically is below 1.5 meters, and strokelength is around 10 meters, so confusion is easily recognised by looking at the data.

Both are interesting indications of stroke quality (a too short drivelength suggests a rushed catch or finish) and fatigue (typically fatigue causes strokelength to shorten, strokerate goes up to maintain pace stays stable). But they are quite person dependent numbers as well, where too much focus on the number can cause weird technique.
