Exporting Data from C2 to Garmin

Post by GlennUk » January 15th, 2021, 4:49 pm

Dear All

Happy new year to all.

My wife has been erging for a couple of months and uses Garmin Connect. We've just upgraded her watch so she can use a HRM strap and whilst 'poking around' on the C2 website noticed that our her logbook on the website wil synch future workouts automatically, no problem there, yet.

However, i was trying to download her historical data as a .csv file and import into Garmin connect online.

No problem downloading the .csv file, but when i try to upload to Garmin Connect keep getting an error.

Is there anything others have noticed that makes this flaky in some way? Ive downloaded the data from online three times and looked at the CSV file, there is nothing obvious to me, the files open in Excel fine.

Were using a PM4 and she has not been using a HRM as her VivomoveHR is not compatible with a chest strap, oneo f the reasons we changed her watch.

Any thoughts very much appreciated

Thanks in advance Glenn

Did you try to upload CSV data ? Garmin says they like FIT and TCX instead. C2 log will export these formats at least for individual workloads from the log in the same spot that you pull CSV. I didn't look for bulk download to confirm you can get FIT and TCX there too.

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=H ... 5uKvqTqu99

Manually uploading activities to Garmin Connect
Connect device to computer using USB cable if that is where the file is saved

Sign in to Garmin Connect

Select cloud icon in top right corner of page

Select Import Data

Select Browse

Locate and select an activity file1

Select Import Data

Once the activities are uploaded, they can be viewed in Garmin Connect.

NOTE: Garmin Connect supports .FIT, .GPX, and .TCX files.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated.

I looked at my wife's Garmin Connect profile and it gives two options one of which relates to .csv files, but i didnt realise when i looked that this relates to Fitbits, and i suspect there is something different about how it stores data to the concept2 logbook.

There doesn't appear to be an alternative setting for the online logbook to be downloaded in anything other than a .csv. file. Are you looking in th eutility for alternative formats or have i missed it somewhere.

PS Im running a PM4 in case it makes any difference, also use RowPro too.

I see the problem.

If you view any one workout you get three buttons to download, one for each format. The downloaded file includes all stroke data, not just summary for the single workout, but only includes data for the workload you are viewing. Lots of people report success importing single workouts to Garmin via FIT file.

If you view your entire history there is one button to download and it is CSV. The CSV file includes a summary for each workout, but not the stroke data, etc. No way to send CSV to Garmin.

I would not want to have to export each workout individually.

There were some online tools that claimed to convert CSV to GPX, you can find them via google. I have never used any, and would personally research carefully before trying any. Sorry no real help.

Hi thanks

on the contrary you are being v.helfpul.

Just one question

When you say this : If you view any one workout you get three buttons to download, one for each format.

Are you looking at the online logbook, utility, as i cant see this in th eonline logbook and didn't notice it earlier when i was on the erg looking at the utility either.

Thanks and much appreciated.

Hi Glenn,

Try this. Open your log. You are now on a page with "Add Workout" and "Latest Workouts" as well as lifetime meters and a summary of the last months workouts by time/distance. (If you are not on this page click "LOG" in the banner at the top of the page and that will bring you to the correct page.)

Look at the "Latest Workouts" section. For each workout listed there is a data, distance, etc. until on the far right of each workout you hit a column titled "ACTION". In the "ACTION" column there are two icons. If you hover over the first icon (a magnifying glass) it will display the word "view". Pick a workout and click the magnifying glass (view icon) for that workout.

You are now on a page that gives the details of the workout. The page has your name, some summary data about the workout, a graph of stroke rate and pace (and if you use a heart rate monitor there will be heart rate data) and a table of splits. The format of the display changes with zoom level and display screen size. For me at 100% the graph is on the left and the splits are on the right.

Under the Split data in the lower right corner is a heading "Download Stroke Data". There are three buttons under "Download Stroke Data", one to download CSV, one to download TCX and one to download FIT data.

Also, more playing with google got this reference. It's not for the feint of heart.

https://pythonhosted.org/rowingdata/

".. Get erg data captured with apps that have no TCX export functionality and convert hem to TCX (implemented) ... ErgData - downloaded to CSV, converted to TCX "

Not sure if the summary history file from C2 as CSV could be converted to a TCX that Garmin could consume. If you want to play with it, goto the URL and look for "However, you may appreciate creating a TCX file for uploading to SportTracks.mobi or Strava:
$ ergdatatotcx testdata.csv
This will create a file testdata.csv_o.tcx which you can upload. I have tested this file on Strava and SportTracks with success. Somehow, even though the resulting file validates against the TCX Schema, I wasn’t able to upload the file to Garmin Connect, because Garmin Connect rejects TCX files from non-Garmin devices." to get started. I have not used this package. You may also need some linux/unix skills or deep windows skills to get it installed. It's also python code, and "Python 3.0 broke backward compatibility, and much Python 2 code does not run unmodified on Python 3." so you may need to do some research to see which version of python works for "rowingdata" - you would use that version.

Thanks this was really helpful, what i had not realized is that depending on how the workout that has been uploaded is categorized depends on whether or not you get the same info when you select the specific row for export in the logbook. Some rows have the graph/table and the necessary buttons to export, in other cases there is no table, nor graph etc.

I have now found out how to export as you suggest. Thats is really helpful and shows why i cannot export from C2 (or possibly other programmes ) direct to Garmin Connect.

The file for a single event is very different to a mass export from the logbook. The fields and formatting is different which is likely to explain why Garmin Connect has trouble with the data.

Since we have connected my wife's logbook with the Garmin Connect app in her profile, she has been uploading her daily workouts from RowPro direct to her C2 logbook and this is instantly pushed to her Garmin Connect account, appearing in her app 'immediately' thereafter.

We may see about exporting individual events form her history via Row Pro w and see if that works, but the fact that i think we have a better understanding of how C2 logbook/ exports data and the data that is successfully exported/imported into Garmin has been very helpful. Its looking like a mass export is not going to happen as neither she nor i have the desire to spend ages exporting individual events and then importing them to Garmin Connect! Shame there is no provision to do a mass export of the whole log and import into the app.

Thank you for your efforts and support, it is really very much appreciated.

This thread helped me out - or at least showed me that I'll have no further luck. My PM5 lost connection to my phone app for my last two workouts. I transferred the data via USB from the PM5 to my PC. And from there I uploaded the workouts to the Concept2 online Logbook.

Unfortunately it seems that uploaded-via-usb workouts lack the "Download as XXXX" options after the split times. That's what I need at this point. I am doubtful this will be fixed anytime soon.

Still, thanks all the same.

The PM5 doesn't record any of the stuff you normally get on your phone. That's not going to change as the monitor has limited RAM space.
