ERG Data

Between the PM5 monitor screen and the three screens in the ERG Logbook on my phone there are a lot of numbers. Most are easy to interpret and some even useful. However one that does not seem to compute for me is the "Score".

My sessions are 30 minutes "Just Rowing" and the resulting score value varies between the 3100's to the 3500's. However it never seems or correlates to distance, number of strokes, pull length, etc. in my judgement. What is Score measuring??

My pm5 doesn't appear to give me a score screen outside of the target and fish game.... Maybe something with newer batch of monitors?

It does not appear on the PM5 monitor. Just on one of the ERGdata phone screens.

I am wondering if maybe it is your ranking compared to other ERGdata rowers. 3000+. Not too good!

Is this on the third screen? Column headings Date, then workout, then score? I have that as well, but the Score results to distance if doing a timed workout, or time if doing a distance workout. It's been quite some time since I've done a Just Row, so I can't say for sure what it's referring to in that scenario.

I did notice that when I went from a Just Row total time of 35 minutes (up from 30) the score value increased significantly.

If you’re rowing a fixed distance, Score will be a time. If time is fixed, it will be a distance. Just Row score is distance.

As Canglem mentions 'Score' is distance rowed if it's a Just Row session. This will be the same as your PM screen.

On a slightly different topic I wonder if there is a way to determine what my "Drive Length" should be based on my, perhaps, arm length and/or height?

Dah. I should have figured that out.

Hhhmm, I'm really undecided on drive length. If I really maximise my stroke I will get it to 1:57 for a lower spm session, but it usually averages 1:42/45 for most, but it also drops to 1:39 for a higher spm session, as I naturally clip my stroke.

There is quite a variety of stroke lengths I have seen from different styles so don't worry too much about it, but I assume it could be useful to see if your stroke length is too short and you need to refine your technique, based on how long it is when you really feel like you have done a full long stroke.

Personally I never try and hit a specific drive length, I just seem to notice occasionally what it is.

Haha, it can happen to everyone

Optimum drive length Is probably best determined as a coach watches and corrects your technique. Realize also that your Drive Length will also change very slightly if you move your Flexfoot footrest, but barely. While body position and pull angle can determine the geometry of the drive length, tweaking all the variables may have greater impact on your power delivery. What may be "optimum" for your skeleton, may not be optimum for your current flexibility level or muscle structure. Believe me, there are enough things to measure and tweak to make you feel like a NASCAR pit chief! But unless you're wanting to win some indoor rowing competitions, just row with good form and don't sweat perfection - it's a moving target!

A decent quick tool, however, is the PM5 power curve. As you adjust things, pay attention to what maximizes the area under your curve, and when max power is being delivered for the longest period of time. Overreaching can make the first part of your power curve weaker than it should be.

"PM5 power curve"? I have not yet discovered that feature. I will look for it and probably have more questions. Thanks.

Cool. Thanks.

Unfortunately I am away from my Concept2 this weekend. I'll check it out tomorrow evening or Monday.

Force curve. I stand corrected. Scroll through your display options on the monitor and visit https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/ ... orce-curve for a simple explanation. For a discussion about how and when each body section (legs, trunk, arms) should apply force, visit http://biorow.com/RBN_en_2001_files/200 ... News12.pdf.
