Introducing "Rowing Workout" & "Ski Ergometer Workout" iOS & Apple Watch Apps for Concept2 Enthusiasts

Post by gogolith » March 27th, 2025, 7:20 am

Dear Concept2 Community,

As a passionate user of Concept2 equipment and an app developer, I'm excited to introduce two applications designed to enhance your training experience: "Rowing Workout" and "Ski Ergometer Workout".

Some Key Features:

Accurate Tracking: Monitor your workouts with precision, capturing metrics like distance, stroke rate, calories burned, and more.

Seamless iPhone and Apple Watch Integration: While you train with your Apple Watch, your iPhone serves as a sleek, real-time display for all your key stats. Keep track of your activity rings, calories burned, heart rate, strokes per minute, speed, and more – all on your iPhone screen.

GameCenter Integration: Compete on leaderboards for fastest 1000m and 2000m times, longest rowing distance over 14 days, and more. Challenge friends and measure up against global bests.

Availability:
Both apps are available for download on the Apple App Store:

Rowing Workout: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/rowing-wo ... 6470894043
Ski Ergometer Workout: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ski-ergom ... 6740768215

Feedback and Support:

Your feedback is invaluable. Please share your experiences, suggestions, or any issues you encounter. Together, we can continue to refine and enhance these tools to better serve the Concept2 community.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your thoughts!

Not an apple user. But if I was, before I installed, I'd want to understand

1. Does this supplement ergdata (for example by hanging off the ANT+ FE-C connect) or does it replace ergata (using btle connection)?
2. Does rowing data continue to get the the C2 log? If so how?
3. Where is historical data kept given this app does not keep any?
4. Can the data be sent to workout aggregators like Garmin, Strava.

I'd also want to look at a few Youtube videos and read some reviews. Searches for your app's name "Rowing Workouts for your Apple Watch" get so many unrelated hits it makes it very hard to find your app.

Use of ANT+ requires specific hardware both the Apple watch and iPhone/iPad lack.

Didn't know this (no apple). Good choice by apple though with ANT+ dead. Wish my Garmin 265 supported BTLE FTMS.

So this app must be an Ergdata replace like Ergzone or EXR... ?

Not apple based either - but I am curious as to what it does differently to ergdata / ergzone + C2 logbook integration.

Well, there is a huge installed base of power meters etc. that support ANT+. And those things are expensive, so people don't just switch them quickly. The latest Garmin products all still have ANT+ antennas on board (including the latest HRM strap), so phase out will be slow.

The key issue is that Apple's dependence on BLE robs many if these devices from their single BLE band. And that Apple messed up their FTMS so badly that it basically is incompatible with most devices. So most consider Apples ANT/BLE approach just a collosal f-up.

This app takes a different approach in terms of design and layout, aiming for a seamless and intuitive user experience. The focus is on deep integration with HealthKit and the Apple ecosystem, allowing users to track and analyze their workouts directly within Apple’s fitness environment.

That said, an export/sync feature to ErgData is planned, so users will be able to integrate their data with Concept2’s ecosystem in the future.

Thanks for your interest and your detailed questions! Here’s a breakdown:

The app uses BTLE for connection and relies on the Apple Watch for heart rate tracking and Activity Energy calculation.
This approach provides more accurate calorie and effort estimations since the Apple Watch takes into account all your personal body data.
(you can also connect a HR-Sensor via ANT+ to your Rower)
All workout data is stored in Apple HealthKit, where it remains accessible for review and further analysis.
An export to ErgData and Strava is planned for a future version later this year.
