Erg Data not sending workouts to Apple Fitness/Health

Post by carlcasca » December 2nd, 2022, 2:23 pm

Hello all,

I use a C2 rower with a pm5 and C2's new erg app for my rows. For HR, I use an apple watch with the erg app installed on it. The erg app connects well w/ the rower and with the watch, and at the end of a workout, the erg app synchs to the C2 logbook. That's all fine. But unfortunately, the rowing workouts will not appear in the Apple Watch fitness/health logs. The old C2 app used to send data to the Apple fitness app w/o issue, but for some reason, the new app doesn't. Here's what I've tried so far:
1) confirm that erg app has permission to read and write all health data.
That didn't work, so I:
2) removed the app from my phone and watch, then reinstalled them and again gave the erg app all permissions.
Still doesn't work.

Other apps do read/write data from the apple health/fitness apps w/o any trouble.
Any ideas from the community here would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same issue. ErgData to AppleHealth on IPhone does not work. I don’t use an Apple watch.
I checked all privacy settings and inter-app connectivity.

I can see from my past Apple Health data that it did work at some point in the past (2018) but that must have been with the old ErgData App.

Any help would be appreciated so I’ll be monitoring if you get answers to this one.

I received a reply today from C2 support and they asked for some screenshots. I'll post again if they help me figure out what's wrong.

Hi @cbdb and others with the same problem. I've exchanged a bunch of emails wit c2 support over the past couple of weeks, and while they seem like they want to help, neither they nor I can figure out why the new c2 app won't send data to apple health. Note that the old app did send data without any problem. I've tried everything: uninstalling, reseting permissions, reordering priority, and on and on. Did you (@cbdb) manage to get it working on your system? Or did anyone else with this problem find a solution? If so, how did you get it working? It obviously works for some people, but unfortunately, not for all. Any ideas from the forum would be appreciated, as I think c2 support is out of ideas.

Thanks for any ideas!

Same problem here. My pm5 retrofit arrived today and while my workout saved to the c2 logbook, It didnt save to apple health.

The workout data from my HR monitor saved to apple health, however.

Is the apple health integration important for you bc your hr monitor is the Apple Watch or bc of the analytics it tracks? I use a chest hr monitor. Like you I can’t get ErgData to sync to apple health but I’m wondering what I’m missing because ErgData saves almost everything I want to the logbook. What else does it save to apple health thats not in the logbook info? Or do you just want it all in apple health bc it’s a one stop place for you to look at your data? Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I had thought it might be something I was doing wrong, so it's useful to know that others see this same bug. I have a friend with the same setup as I have, so I asked him to try, and he also sees the same issue.

To answer your question: I use the apple watch as my HR monitor and the health app to keep track of all different kinds of workouts. So it's simplest for me to have all my workout data in one place, rather than a different logbooks for running/swimming/rowing/biking. The C2 log stores more than the health app would store (if C2 were able to send data), but what the health app does store is good enough for me.

I really don't understand why C2 makes such fantastic rowers (the best by far), while simultaneously making such poor-quality software. With Apple's framework, sharing the data from the app to Apple Health is a student-level programming project. The software doesn't need to be some highly polished thing, but they should at least get this basic functionality working. I went back and forth with support for a while, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong with their software either and eventually just gave up. C2 makes amazing machines, but they need to outsource their software development.

Ben at C2 support figured out what the bug in their software is. My erg is on slides, but the app will only share data if you set it to a rower not on slides. I made the change in the app's settings and now it shares info with Apple Health. Maybe they'll fix the bug, but in the meantime, this is good enough. Thanks again to Ben for finding ending this frustrating bug hunt!

I have just found this thread because I have a new iPhone 14 pro. The old xs did allow ErgData to update exercise/health etc. The new one is not getting anything from ErgData only recognising and including rowing if I wear my watch. Has anything else need updated since the original post in January. I too have tried deleting etc all to no avail. It looks like I don’t do much exercise even if I do a 2 hour row!!!!

I can't help with Ergdata - that's on C2, but as an app developer, I can say that data exchange between 3rd party apps and devices OS requires continuous compatibility checking. For example, Ergdata would need to be checked against current and previous Apple iOS versions (which changes minimum every month given bug fix updates, not to mention the large variance in device models and frequency with which the owners actually updated their iOS), Ergdata itself (appears to be updated every 2 months), and PM5 firmware updates (unclear schedule). Generally if you keep everything updated on your side that resolves most issues if the app developer is actively updating.

I am there with you all in the frustration when you do a workout and the exercise time doesn't appear on your watch/iPhone. There seem to be too many different issues going on for rowers for there to be one cause, but I'll add my finding "solution" in case it helps someone else. For me, I had been synching from my PM5 for the last 5 months and one day I noticed it suddenly didn't record my workout. Hmm, strange, must be an anomaly (that's only happened one other time across daily workouts), weird, but maybe a glitch happened. The next day, the same thing -- go through and check everything I could find -- no luck. Then it hit me to see when the phone last installed a new version of the ERG app... Sure, enough, a few days ago. There's a setting on the ERG to send data to Apple Health that gets reset (apparently) when a new version goes in. Once, I set the option to send data to Apple Health --- amazing... (or perhaps duh), the watch, iPhone, and PM5 are back to working in harmony.

Again, there seem to be some different issues for folks but do try going to the settings in the ERG app - App Connections, Apple Health.

Best of Luck correcting this annoying issue folks.

Hi, Ergdata is sending data to Apple Health for me but it seems very basic in what it sends - just calories and heart rate really. I found a way round it using Healthfit and downloading the FIT file from the logbook and then uploading to Healthfit which then does write all metrics to Apple Health - it's just a bit of a manual process! Is there not way to send power, cadence, speed etc directly to Apple Health at the end of the workout? Thanks.

So that connections setting was not connected for me.

Do you know how I catch up from the data that is showing in Ergdata log book to that which is shown in Apple Health?

Right now when I see the workout in Apple Health it is only show 35 min and nothing more.

At the moment, Apple Health only shows a summary of the active minutes, I believe. Have you looked at the workout in Apple Fitness as opposed to Apple Health? In Apple Fitness, I see heart rate, total calories, etc. Apple Health will show me where the active minute came from. For example, for me, it is saying minute 1 Apple Watch. Minute 2 Apple Watch, because I use the ErgData app on both when I'm rowing. If you are hoping that the PM5 will send more data, I thnk others on the forum have mentioned that it would be a request to C2 to update the app for tighter integration with Apple Heatlh, if that is possible through their APIs.

Does that make sense? Please clarify what you are seeing if I didn't understand your question.

Thank You.
