PM4 firmware, USB connection to phone for Ergdata and Boatcoach

I've run into a series of issues trying to use Ergdata and Boatcoach on my Model D/PM4.

I'm using a printer cable + A-to-C adapter to connect my Android phone to the PM4. When I plug in the cable, the phone asks me to choose either Ergdata or Boatcoach for the "USB storage device". If I ignore the prompt, the phone doesn't connect to the PM, whether a rowing app was already open or not. If I select either app, it connects to the PM4 and I'm ready to go, except... the PM4 then repeatedly displays an error code (121 -46, if memory serves), and I can't actually use the screen. If I "Just row" or had a workout already set up and ready to go, the phone app starts up and records the session, but I don't have access to the PM display and information I want (eg target time, force curve, or pace boat).


According to Concept2, this category of error codes relates either to the firmware or to third-party software:
"PM4 Troubleshooting
Resolution for Error Codes 120- through 129-
Error codes 120- through 129- occur when the monitor is being used with external or third-party software. If you receive this error, you should update the monitor firmware. With the exception of Concept2 ErgData, this error could also indicate a problem with the third-party software and not the monitor."

My PM4 is currently running version 316, and the latest firmware is 332, so I figured I just needed to update the firmware. This seems to be confirmed by the fact that my PM can't recognize my Garmin HRM-Run belt, which is a feature added in version 330, while ErgData support was added in version 318. And yet, the C2 utility says the firmware is up to date.

So I'm back to square one, and unsure what to do (other than buying a PM5). Is there a way to force the firmware update? Am I missing anything else in the phone/PM interaction, like a setting or an option that I forgot to select at either end?

It's strange, because BoatCoach worked perfectly at the gym today (phone prompt, select app, good to go) with the same cable on a PM3 running version 315.
