finding the right human at Concept2

Post by CJOttawa » February 6th, 2020, 9:14 am

Hey all!

I've had a brief discussion with someone at Firstbeat Technologies about supporting the Concept2 rower for Firstbeat's VO2max calculations.

They currently support running, walking, and cycling with a power meter - activities fraught with challenges like inclines, headwinds - and the C2 has a precise power meter and fewer outside influences, I thought it would be a good synergy.

Is there a name of someone at Concept2 I could pass along to Firstbeat?

I already forwarded a link to a post here on the forum describing how the C2 power meter works:

What's stopping the FirstBeat folks picking up the phone and calling C2 at: 1-800 245 5676? Or 001 802 888 7971 if they're not in the US/Canada.

In parallel to this, wouldn't C2 also need to make the PM5 broadcast over bluetooth/ANT+ as a power meter to be recognized by a Garmin watch? Or are you proposing to connect the PM5 and firstbeat some other way

I'm not completely sure if its an omission by C2 or if there is some other issue around it, but with ergIQ showing its possible for a PM5 and garmin to connect its crazy that there's been no push to have the PM5 recognized as a power meter so the various firstbeat metrix work for the bike erg, and that theres been none of the engagement you're pushing to get rowing added to firstbeat - good luck with your project

It already does, though I am not sure exactly which data are sent. Old Garmin watches like the 910XT could connect to it and get the data.

In newer Garmin watches (up to and including my Fenix 5X+), this is not possible anymore, unless you use the ErgIQ app.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Fenix 6 can connect to the BikeErg:

That is good to know, I wonder if its an update from C's end for the bike only or if the PM5 for rowers are able to do the same?
