One of the best things I like about rowing on a Concept 2 is it shares a strong kinship with my sport of skateboard racing in that the participants all are willing to share information openly and willingly. That is totally cool..
Thank you all for all of this great information. I am going to purchase the full version this weekend and that might clear up the delay part on the pace boat.
I like the idea also of creating my own re-row pacing over a distance that has varible rates at the different break points within the piece

I assumed it would since you wrote this:john_n wrote:I seriously doubt that modifying the ASCII text portion of a rowfile would result in something usable....
If you send me a short file say a 200m peice, I'll see if I can see if I can figure it out and modify it. I've done this sort of thing before--Years ago I've decoded a FoxPro data base (of cement plant emissions) that was in binary, and I've recently decoded and modified ErgMonitor Files which actually records every pulse from the flywheel--which is many data points per stroke.john_n wrote: You can also try downloading rowfiles from the C2 rankings, if they were done with RowPro. Find someone who rowed his or her session with RowPro, in the event you are interested in, as close to the pace you would like as possible, click on it and it will be emailed to you for you to import.
Send me a PM and I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh... you're a programmer/hacker. I understand where you are coming from to some degree, since my wife is a programmer and website designer and has coded in assembly and dozens of other "higher" language.
If you want a short RowPro rowfile, you can find plenty to download on the 500M rankings. But I've discovered that some of the rankings files that show to have been uploaded to the rankings with RowPro were not uploaded with the rower's strokes included, so you will have to be sure that the rowfile you examine and try to modify also has the strokes included. Without the strokes included, it is a "dud" and can't be rowed against.
But I wasn't clear enough when I gave the first answer and recommended downloading rowfiles or requesting them to be emailed from other rowers. I wasn't thinking of using the relatively rare knowledge that some people, such as you, my wife, and other programmers have, to modify the rowfile.
I was simply meaning that if he wanted to row against a "pace boat" that would vary its pace throughout the session and perhaps speed up in the last split or two near the end, it would be simplest to row the kind of session himself, save the rowfile with all of his stroke data, then row against it. Or... ask another rower who has RowPro, to row that piece in a manner he described and then email the rowfile to him.
During an online RowPro session, whether it is a race or not, the instantaneous pace of each rower in each lane is displayed, as each rower takes each stroke. The rowfiles which have the stroke data saved have all that information saved for each stroke. If, for example, the person who rowed the session that made that rowfile slows or stops, to take a drink of water, then when that rowfile is rowed against, the boat of that person will slow or stop at that same point during the session.
If you would like a shorter rowfile to analyze, shorter than one of the 500M rowfiles available in the rankings, then I can email one that is 200M or shorter, but your email address is not displayed in your profile.
Happy rowing.

I down loaded some of the 500m files and they did have stroke by stroke info. It wouldn't take much to write a program that generated the desired file. It is probably even doable for in a spread sheet with the possible addition of some search and replace data editing in a text editor. Wouldn't want to do it that way but it would beat doing it by hand!

All I can say is... you are quite a hacker (in the sense of the book, The Hackers, by Steven Levy)!
It was "HammerHead Sk8r" who was posing the question of how to generate a pace boat with different paces throughout a session, so he might be especially interested in trying the results.
So, I hope HammerHead Sk8r is keeping up with what you are doing....
My wife is the programmer... I'm not even spreadsheet-literate.
I'm happy with rowing online and against downloaded rowfiles. Recently I rowed online with a few others and picked one rower who was about my speed to row with and we took turns challenging each other to faster paces, but nothing too extreme.
I personally prefer other people to paceboats and prefer rowing with them in real time, to against downloaded files. But I prefer downloaded files to row against than the paceboats.
I use paceboats for some purposes though - for example, to restrain my pace when trying for a good 2000m time (It seems best results are achieved if I save the sprint for the last 500m and make each successive 2000m attempt with a slightly faster paceboat, each time sprinting the last 500m to leave the paceboat as far behind in the last split as possible).
Happy rowing

I am stoked on trying this out.....I am going to read over the details this weekend and see how to make this work..
Being a newbie (sort of...I purchased my Concept2 Model D in July'06 as a supplimental cross trainer and 30k away from completing my first 1 million meters..which I will complete this weekend!!) this type of stuff is a little bit of a challenge but I think I can figure it out.
Thanks for the info...
Working on my goal of rowing 750,000 m in 10 weeks and will be on track as of tomorrow...end of two weeks is tomorrow and I am at 136,000m and have a 20k planned for tomorrow.

Not everyone has the computer available to hook up to a C2 machine (use only a 15 ft or shorter USB cable) and go on the internet with RowPro, but if you'd like to try the thrill of racing others online in realtime, that is yet something else to "get stoked" about.
The developers of RowPro are very helpful and one of them, Pam Loeffen, has her email address posted in her profile in the RowPro Rowers club on the C2 site, along with an invitation to contact her and she will help newbies who want to try the software online.
Happy rowing.

FYI...downloaded (paid for) the full version of RowPro and the delay or descrepency on time between my PM3 and my laptop is smaller but there is still a little differnce. Meters, stroke rate, heart rate, and all other metrix are dead on.
I also rowed an alternating 500m recovery/500 m 100% effort piece with no interval rest over 5000m and the time seemed to stay even closer..but that was probably just a fluke with nothing to do with that type of piece.

Now that you have your own registered copy, you can also register with Oarbits (the area of digitalrowing.com site which relates to online rowing) so you can try online rowing.
You can also visit the online rowing directly, via RowPro, by either clicking Session Setup and choosing online or clicking Control Center then Oarbits .... but to do online rowing at the moment, you need to download the Beta version if you haven't already done so. The "current" version is 2.018 and the Beta version (soon to be released as current) is 2.2.
There is a download link and instructions on digitalrowing.com
The current version, 2.018 can be used for online rowing, but everytime I've checked, there has been nobody else online on that server. Everyone who does regular online rowing seems to have switched to the Beta, which has more features and the capability for 16 online rowers in a session versus 8 for the current version.
Each version (current and Beta) uses its own server.
After you download the Beta, you can start a new database or transfer a copy of your old database to the Beta. They will both be merged seamlessly after the Beta is officially released.
To row online, you will first need to go into the Beta Control Center and enter the information there to tell RowPro about your Concept2 logbook account.
One of the features I like about RowPro is that, after that account information is entered, rowing meters can be logged by rowpro by selecting the unlogged sessions from within the logfiles on RowPro and right clicking & choosing upload to Concept2.
If you see an online session that includes Pam Loeffen, such as today's
"30min_GenFit_All_Welcome" scheduled for 19:45 GMT (12:45 pm Pacific Daylight Time... but all times use the common time zone of GMT to avoid confusion), then you can show up more than 5 minutes early in the chat room and ask her questions or hang around online after the session... she is one of the resident experts on RowPro usage.
