Myers-Brigg Personality Types

Post by igoeja » June 28th, 2009, 12:31 pm

I have often wondered about the personalities of rowers, but up until recently had not searched for any material. Leaving aside the validity of such test, I found some interesting bits, in particular:

http://www.bhfinder.com/Articles/Detail ... ty-Profile

I tried to put together a quick poll, just to see what others thought, but the 16 types number too many for the system, so I limited it to the most common classifications.

If you don't know which type you are, and would like to, the following are quick and easy tests:

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

BTW, I currently test as a INTJ, but borderline for both E/I, and T/F.

That's a lousy test, if you ask me. I came out being compared to Hannibal Lecter, fer crissake.

Me Too

Post by igoeja » June 29th, 2009, 9:29 am

Yes, these tests are often terrible. And the pop psych world is full of unsubstantiated crap.

For a more even-handed approach to personality type similarities:

Well, instead of Lechter, I think the INTJ is sometimes considered like Ike and Ayn Rand. Better company?

Not really. It also listed JFK and Hillary C., which is not an improvement. However, if I remember correctly, one of the lists included Isaac Newton and Marie Curie. Those I would be happy to accept.

P.S. On checking your message, it seems that you are in the same boat.

I came out as INTJ also. The list of characters it gave me included Stephen Hawking, Andy Grove, Marie Curie, Igor Sikorsky, and Hillary Clinton. I'm sure that I can kick all of their butts on the erg.

And mine as well, Rick, obviously — and you have. But James Igoe is younger than you (49) and looks to be bigger. I haven't seen his stats, but he has probably kicked both our butts on the erg. However, we might have it over him in the marathon. That's where you and I do our best and, like most ergers, he might not have done one yet, even if he is an INTJ.

Another boring ISTJ. But somebody has to do the work. I have to go oil the chain on my erg now, log my latest workouts, and update my pace curves.

INFP.

Interesting. I took this test (or one similar) 20 years ago and came out with the same result.

Miserable Erg

Post by igoeja » July 13th, 2009, 3:55 pm

Bob,

I'm a fairly miserable erg, so most recent PB for 2K is 7:11.9, and my best relative performance rank is for 5k, then 2K, with lesser scores for longer and shorter pieces, but both around 66th percentile, with 2K and 5K somewhat better.

Interesting that I use a Michel de Montaigne quote as a personal motto and the test says I'm like him.

Don't know about the Princess Dianna likeness though
though it now disturbs me that I once went as her to a Holloween party...
never again... some one thought I was a trans' and started hitting on me.

ENFP. First time I've actually tested that. Normally ENTP. But 50% preference on the F/T,

Now, I'm off to ignore the training diary, consider whether I should go for a beer, and whether to blow off the morning session again.
Rich Cureton. 7:02 at BIRC. But "much better than that now". Yeah, right.

INTJ's are among the rarest people in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Brig ... evelopment). Why include them in the poll and not INTP? I feel neglected. Are these polls limited to only 6 options? (edit: ok I got it. I should read the link first before commenting.)

In the Netherlands application of mb-types in sports is fairly popular and there is some literature about it. http://www.actiontype.nl/

Yes, I love rowing and I'm an INTJ. I think I meet the personality profile well and would be keen that the other woman I row with take the test too. It might help us iron out some of the tensions we seem to experience in a boat together (sorry that's my INTJ at work again)!!

ENTP....do not know how this applies to rowing as there is no interpersonal interaction with my rower at this time......
Every time I save the world I am happy.
It is quite exciting!
