Just ordered a Concept 2 E model on Friday

Hello All..my first post here:

I had a quadruple bypass in Feb 08. I have been using the Concept 2 D at cardio rehab during maintenance exercises at my hospital center recently. I have had four 23 minutes sessions doing about 5k meters each after about four shorter sessions getting used to being on the machine. I have really enjoyed the whole body workout that it is providing. Of course, I have no proper technique at the moment but have been reading all I can to learn as much as I can before it comes in at the end of this week or early next.

I have lost about ~90 pounds since my surgery in Feb 08 to date, down from about 300 pounds. I still have about 20-25 to loose to reach my target. I am 58 years old and ~70 inches in height.

I have been using an Schwinn Air-dyne at home since starting Rehab and now after doing some fairly intense intervals it seems to be ailing. I have used the Airdyne over the last 10 years off and on. So rather than purchase another one, I went for the Concept 2 E model based on my recent experience at rehab.

There seems to be a lot of information available, almost to much to get my hands around at this time.

I will probably jump in with stupid questions and posts every once in while in the future. Please have some patience with me. Thanks.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your recovery from surgery and also your weight loss. I also started rowing last year after recovering from surgery but only achilles surgery. I have found the the concept 2 web site and the online community to be a great way to stay motivated as well as getting excellent advise on improving your rowing from the veteran rowers that post here.

Model E Purchase

Slwiser - congrats on your Model E purchase. I think that you will really enjoy this machine. I have a Model C but have rowed on the Model E a number of times and would personally purchase this model if I had the choice/had to purchase a new erg.

The best advice that I can give you after some 20+ years of rowing on the erg is to enjoy it. I am pushing 50 so I am about 10 years your junior but I am rowing more now, longer distances than I did when I was younger ()did more short & hard work back then) and I am enjoying it much more although I do have to battle through soreness and aches and pains that did not phase me when I was younger. My times are respectable but not record breaking and I never fail to get a good workout. I generally row 4 times per week and average roughly 40,000 meters per week. Andy

Thanks for the welcome...

My plan today is to start doing a minimum of 3 days maybe four days at home and the two at cardio rehab. So that will give me around 20-25 minutes twice at rehab (~5k each) on the C2 and probably around 180-250 minutes at home per week for a total between 250-300 minutes per week. I have been doing that now with my Airdyne. I figure that 40 to 50k meters per week will be about my average or very near and just try to enjoy the workouts. Maybe this is just hopeful thinking but right now it is a plan.

My weekly EPOC totals have been averaging between 500-600 per week with last week having a total right at 750. If you are not aware of what EPOC is here is a general article on it : drlenkravitz.com/Articles/epocarticle.html or you can Google EPOC which is Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption. I have a Suunto based heart monitor model T6c with Firstbeat Athlete software and I use it's coach feature. The coaching feature is EPOC based.

My personal Concept 2 is scheduled for Tuesday delivery. I am looking forward to it and starting learning better technique.

It came in today but I have not put it together yet.

I did 5K at the hospital today at 22:13.6. This being my seventh 5k. Working on technique as much as I can at the hospital. When I get mine together this should help quite a bit.

The C2E came together today and saw some action. I rowed about 35 minutes with some rest to play with the PM4. Not a hard workout but I am feeling it in my legs. It is a different set of muscles from the Airdyne work that I am so used too.

Just finished a 60 minute row...This is about my 10th row. It was fairly slow but I was after the endurance effort that I got out of it.

Since getting the C2 I have put over 325K meters on myself at Cardio Rehab and my own C2 mostly in the last six weeks. I am getting to enjoy these workouts. Just need more fitness to allow me to do a faster pace without the heart rate getting out of control but this will come.

What I have found out is that since the C2 is such a whole body workout that many of my smaller muscle groups were not up to the job compared with my leg muscles that I have previously toned using the stationary bike. These muscles groups are having to come up to speed.

Good for you.. I hurt my back about 2 months ago and I am undergoing rebuilding cartilage in my knee too, so I am laying low on the rowing right now. I hope to be back rowing in the fall.. Keep up the great workouts..

Since my last post I have accumulated about 414k total meters.

I am doing much better at keeping a pace than before. Now it is going to take time to build fitness..more meters I guess and more intensity as well.

It has been a while since I visited this thread so I wanted to post an update.

It has been since June 3 that I put my C2E together. I have now rowed over 700k since beginning rowing in May. In May my meters were less than 30k. I have been busy since in June where my meters were less than 185k, in July 229k and in Aug so far 260k with another three days left. It is possible that I would make it 300k but it is in how I feel when it sit down to row that determines what I do on any particular day.

My goal is increasing fitness. In May I could hardly do 5k at a time. Now 30 minutes is my standard workout duration after warming up for 10-15 minutes with many 60 minutes workouts and a couple of HMs behind me.

I am building slowly but continuing to build for sure.
