Elliptical trainer - which to choose

Post by pkiszk » January 11th, 2015, 5:13 am

A pretty unusual question here, I suspect. I need to buy an elliptical trainer for my wife. She does row a bit, but it is not good for her ailing lower back (at least that what she thinks). On the other hand, she tried an orbitrek and would like to have one at home. Would you help me with picking the right equipment ? My budget is approx. USD 1,5000-2,000, maybe slightly more. Ideally, I would like to have it a PM-type of power metering system and ability to download workouts to a PC. It seems that some of the Kettlers and Life Fitness offer that. Also, Octane Fitness looks interesting, any of you had experience with any of these devices ?

Unfortunately, for that price range, you will be able to get something that will work, but not very well, or for very long. I used a Precor quite a bit at the gym and it offered great cardio conditioning, ease of use, and durability...but also cost upward of 5-7k. If I could swing it, I would probably own an elliptical over a rower. But right across from the ellipticals was a C2. Ellipitcals are one of those pieces of equipment where it is better to join a gym and let them worry about maintenance.

However, if you are set on buying one, look at what equipment is in your local gym and have your wife try that for a few months before making a decision. I made the mistake of not listening to people on this forum when I was in the market for buying a rower several years ago. I went with a First Degree Fitness rower, and recently cleaned out my filing cabinet and found the original receipt. $1899 thrown right out the window because neither the store I bought it from, nor the manufacturer would fix it when it broke.

You may be able to find a good elliptical for sale used, but it really comes down to due diligence.

This was the model I used at the gym: http://www.amazon.com/Precor-Premium-Co ... B0029KL2TW
