Knee Replacement Surgery

Post by GrillmanJohn » January 2nd, 2008, 12:43 am

I have been using my Concept2 rower regularly since 1996. Medical issues now necessitate knee replacement surgery. I am fearful I will be unable to resume rowing once knee heals. Would appreciate comments from any rower who has had experience with this surgery and their ability to continue rowing.

Sorry I can't answer your question (it bugs me when people answer some other question than the one that's asked, sorry to do this to you). But I've had some thoughts - there are stem cell techniques that can repair cartilage, now. But they're very new and not covered by insurance.

There are also different kinds of knee replacements, if you have to get one you can look into whether one kind is better than another. Like high-flexion knee replacements.

It's something where if you can possibly wait on the knee replacement the treatment may be much improved in a few years.

I think it would help with knee stress if you don't do a deep knee bend while rowing.

Laura,
Thanks for the response. Circumstances are such that I am unable to postpone much longer. However, I will find a way to keep rowing.

If you can't row on the concept 2 after the knee replacement you could try a magnetic rowing machine.
It's much less impact than a concept 2 because the magnetic resistance doesn't firm up when you kick on it. It's a constant force resistance. The Concept 2 feels similar to running, the magnetic rower is more like biking.
For the same reason though it's harder to get an intense aerobic workout on a magnetic rower, after you get in shape. Just as it's generally easier for people to raise their heart rate running rather than biking.
I bought one, I couldn't get my heart rate high enough on it after working out on it for a few months. But I work out hard. If you are looking for a more relaxed casual workout it might do fine for you.

I didn't have knee replacement but I did have my ACL repaired. My doctor said that biking was the best thing to do after the surgery because it was low impact. I figured erging was low impact as well. I asked him about erging, I had to explaing what it was, and he said low/no impact workouts that build back up the muscles in the leg is perfect. Ask you doctor or PT if erging is right for you. You may have to explain it to them but I bet they will be 100% behind any low impact leg powered work out that you enjoy.
