Rowing Shorts
Rowing Shorts
Sorry to be so lame as to ask this delicate question, but what does one wear under rowing shorts...or are they like bicycling shorts where "commando" is the rule?

That's a question I've almost asked several times!
I wear Fruit of the Loom briefs under the rowing shorts myself, but have been wondering if the hem around the legs is what causes the bruising I sometimes get at the bottom of my spine when rowing longer pieces.
I suppose I should try going commando and see, but then I think I'd want to shower before and after!

Every time I tried with underwear under the shorts, I wound up with friction burns, and sometime blisters, where you do not want them!

I had the same question. When I bought my first pairs from JL, I called them and they recommended wearing underwear. The rowing shorts can get quite skanky otherwise (more than they will already). I wear boxer briefs (they're as tight as briefs but have short legs like boxers - sort of shaped like the rowing shorts themselves). After I put on the rowing shorts, I just need to reach under the legs to straighten out the brief legs.
Besides, if you're in good rowing shape, I think boxer briefs make a nice look around the house for the lady!

I met a guy rec league rowing OTW this summer who is about my vintage (early 50s) he too was a novice rower and bought his first pair of rowing shorts for our first race....only to be told by his 13 year old daughter as he was leaving the house..."Dad, men your age shouldn't wear shorts like that"!
HA!

I wear jockey briefs, and have a plastic bucket by the shower to rinse/wash them while I shower. Then I hang them on a bar that I've installed across the top, and do the same with my running togs.
The briefs are fine around the house but a bit skimpy for round the town wear, so I keep a running shorts shell by the erg, in case of needing to slip it on to talk with the neighbors.

Same as what is worn under Kilts...
If you are Erging at Home, Joe Boxer Cotton Boxer Briefs (alone), no point in sweating up two layers.
Oh, and for the Regular rowing shorts, don't go too tight, especially in public, the more they stretch the more transparent they become. (Just say no to crack.)

Just logged my first 10,000 meters on the Holiday Challenge wearing JL rowing shorts, solo/commando.
Can't imagine adding another layer inside, especially cotton! These shorts seem very warm even though I rowed in the garage with the door open. Mid 50's here in So Cal. Don't know if they'd be too warm for summertime.

Nothing???
I don't wear shorts, but something similar to biking tights, although without the chamois. No blisters, etc., but my wife finds it bothersome that people can see my penis. Not an exhibitionist, but years ago I stopped wearing anything under my running tights; it just looked stupid to wear something under tights, and often got in the way of a comfortable run.
