I had heard about this on the LBRA grapevine, but this site which was posted on the UK forum tells the whole story.

The video clip (link near the end of the article) of the '76 Olympic final is worth checking out. The stats (0.6s) tell how close it was, but hearing that quick beep-beep at the finish really brings it home. You can also hear the chant: "USA USA ..." in the background during the last half minute or so. Unfortunately, so close but not quite there .

Bob, were you in Montreal for the '76 Olympics?
There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

No. I am not much for spectator sports. My comments were based on that video.jackarabit wrote:Bob, were you in Montreal for the '76 Olympics?
I had the good fortune to meet a lot of the people involved when I got back to rowing in 1990 after a 40 year gap. Many of the participants were (and are) still members of the Long Beach Rowing Association.
