Hey, I row in a high school rowing club in the USA. I am currently 16 and am about to be a senior in high school. I am going to be going to a city college for my first 2 years of college and then hopefully transferring to a state or UC.My question is this. Can I still row in my high school rowing program? I will be 19 by the end of my sophomore year in college. There is one person in our rowing club who goes to a city college as well.

So basically, am I allowed to do this. What exactly are the qualifications to be a junior/high school rower?

What state are you in? Rules vary in every one.

Your best bet would be to speak to someone at your school to see what the eligibility requirements are for your team. I know that when I was competing in high school sports (oh so very long ago!) there was a limit of time that you could compete.

If you live in SoCal, you might check out Orange Coast College. It is a community college, i.e. a two year school, but it has an excellent rowing program. There may be other 2 year schools that have crew, but I haven't heard of them.

It's been suggested that I go there, however staying close to home is priority.

The Rules of Rowing say that you are no longer eligible to row as a junior (e.g. high school) after you turn 19 or after you complete your 12th year of secondary school. The exceptions are for rowing on the Junior National Team or some international rowing. For example, Nareg Guregian just completed his first year at Cal (Berkeley) but he is also rowing this summer for the Junior National Team, because he will not turn 19 until next January. However, he is not eligible to compete on a high school team. Nor, once you graduate from high school, will you. Go to Orange Coast and row. They are a great feeder system for Cal.
