New logbook page design

Post by c2bill » April 12th, 2007, 11:52 am

i'm working on the next generation of log page - trying for:

-faster load time after inputting a result
-more flexibility in display options (i'm working on a calorie and pace calculator view)

-eventually the ability to quickly sort and modify views (a la google maps for instance).

I have a beta version page that i'd like some feedback on - right now i'm trying to sort final alignment issues - then i'll be adding features in preparation for ranking roll over which happens at the end of this month.

to view the new page log in as usual then use this page:

www.concept2.com/sranking03/log_frame.asp

this will let you see how the new page looks and works. comments are welcomed.

I had no problems with the page we are using now :?

But what I see I can live with what you've changed...so no problem.

Bill, I'm really sorry, but I went ahead and logged in as I usually do. The URL for that page was the same one you're showing in your post. I went ahead and re-entered the address, but (unsurprisingly) it just brought me back to the same page as always. I don't know how to get to your beta version!

Help, please.

the 'new' page doesn't look that much different - the main thing that you'll notice is that you can 'scroll' through your results in the small results window on the screen - and that when you enter a new result - it appears more quickly since the entire page doesn't have to reload.

if the comments are all "i don't notice the difference" i've probably done my job well :-)

I can see the alignment issues you mention.

I don't have a work-out to enter, so can't comment on whether that's faster.

The main thing I notice is that you've added the scroll, but taken away the option to set how many workouts show on the page. I would like to still have the option to show 5 or 10 or 20 workouts with the remainder available by scrolling.

Thanks,

you can still set the number of workouts to display by looking under the profile panel and editing the number there (this is where it originally was...)

given the feedback so far i may hold off on this feature - as it will be quite a bit of work to get it perfect -and it sounds as though it won't do much beside reduce load time for a few users...

  • I have my profile set to UK and language=4, can I have the date in my local format (dd/mm/yyyy) rather than your local format (mm/dd/yyyy)?
  • I like the fact that it defaults to today, I've not checked when it moves to tomorrow (I'm assuming 23:59 Eastern, rather than 23:59 local). Should you go for more I18N by getting my local timezone in my profile?
  • I'm a Firefox 2.0.0.3 user (on WinXP); I've got some serious alignment problems. [I'll post a screen shot on Imageshack when I can recover my imageshack password.] I've not tried this on Firefox on Linux, or on Opera. Can you strive to be browser neutral?
    Image
  • The scrollable section is too small, can I have a choice of how many lines to display down there (5 (default),10,25,50,100)?
  • I don't need the notes to be permanently visible - I've read them once, I don't refer to them everyday.
  • Why is the entry form stretched across the whole page?
  • Do I really need a column for age? I know when my birthday is and how far from April 30th/May 1st (it's exactly three weeks from my birthday to April 30th - I'm three weeks older than my cousin). I know my age will change on 4/9 (or 9/4 in my locale).
Other than that it's not much visibly different from the current system.

You are correct in assuming 23:59 Eastern. I'm in Mountain, and if I don't post to my log until evening, I sometimes need to change the date back from tomorrow to today.

I've always thought it would be nice to have the option to log your session in pace per 500M in addition to the current elapsed time mode. I know it would be a little less accurate, espcially for longer distances, but that's usually what I am looking at.
If you don't try, you will never know how bad you suck.

With distance and elapsed time it's simple maths to calculate the pace/500m. I'd like that as an additional column in the web page (I don't need it in the downloadable spreadsheet data as I can determine it in Excel very easily).

You could use Greasemonkey and a bit of Javascript to add that stuff yourself. Hmmm, now there's an idea of something to code if I have a spare hour. [Not this weekend, I'm joining in with a 24hour charity ergathon in Manchester,UK.]

ok - here is my plan after reading posts and hearing from several people.

1. browser neutral - i've worked hard to make the ranking/log as browser neutral as possible - mainly by using 'server side' code as opposed to javascript etc. the inline frame was going to be my first use of a higher level HTML4.0 function - and then go from there however...

2. most of you seem fine with the existing system - with a few tweaks.

3. adding the /500 pace was a common request so...

4. as for date format for UK / euro users - i'll put this on the list of possibles.

i'll work on adding the /500 pace to the result display after the ranking season rolls over - we'll also have a new graphic look in place - just to point out that we are in a new season.

cheers all.

This would be a nice feature. I don't use the elapsed time anyway and it's just an annoyance that keeps me from logging the distance. If it wasn't there or else we could put pace, then the log would be much easier to use. Thanks for the suggestion.

Bill,

New page appears to work okay for me. Very quick to bring up in IE at work. Will try Firefox at home tonight. Like the /500 pacing. saves me from having to calculate and put in comments for longer set pieces. But may have to start separating warmup cooldown entries from work out entires because the /500 m reading covers the full workout.

Would love to be able to see at least a week or two weeks of workouts on the scroll. And maybe you can have all the language below the scroll linked to a pdf versus repeating on the log page.

I agree with the comment of doing away with age and weight for the log sheet. I don't change my age as often as I once did (didn't help my training). And until my wife quits cooking my weight will not flucuate between l and h.

This may free up some space for the comments. I use the comments to breakdown the work out and record rest intervals, which can get expanded and reformatted when I export to excel.

Keep up the nice efforts to improve the site navigation.
