Lance definately wins the lightweight, leg strength combined with the best aerobic capacity on the planet..
Shaq takes the HW, but he still looses the overall, which Lance takes, by 1 sec...

Is there some kind of adjustment you are making to come to that conclusion, or is is straight 2k completion time?

I'm not really being scientific
I am just a big LA fan..
In a head to head, Lance vs Shaq, even though Shaq is a great athlete, and has 14" and 160lb advantage, I still think Lance beats him.

Reminds me of this exchange:
Bill Swerski: Ditka vs. the Giants. Now remember it's only Ditka, not da regular Bears team.
Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan: OK....I'd say the Giants by about 800.
Swerski:
Right Danny. Are you
from New York?
Pat Arnold: He lives in New York I bet.
Swerski: You like it dere? You can stay dere as far as I'm concerned.
Sheridan: No, it's just that it's one guy against...
Swerski: Yeah, dats alright, just take your crack pipe and go home. Get outta here Danny.
Todd O'Connor: Yeah, go shoot somebody wit a gun.
P.S. I like Lance too. Lightweights rule.

Great Thread!
I'll take Lance for the LWT and Shaq for the HWT. I gotta think Shaq would take overall though.

One thing though. Don't know if Lance would be a lightweight any more, He's been lifting weights and has beefed up a fair bit.

Shaq would surge ahead early, but pack it in at about 1,400 meters.
Lenox Lewis would go out well for 3 minutes, but then sit quietly for a minute, expecting his manager to ice him.
Meanwhile Tiki rows to an easy victory.
Lance wins the lwt race by a big margin.
Iverson wouldn't know how to row. Practice? Iverson doesn't practice. Are you serious? Practice!
De la Hoya would have the best technique, having rowed in front of a mirror, admiring himself. But the money would not be good enough for him actually to race.
Tiki would crush Lance in a row off.
Heavyweights rule.

Except when they are a 172lb HWT. That is to lean to make LWT like I am!

Rich--
Size isn't everything. Go to the rankings. Check out the leader of the 60 yr olds for 60 minutes. David Woodard: 16,000 meters. That's a 1.52+ pace for an hour.
I spoke with him briefly at the Crash-Bs in 2004, where in his mid-60s he rowed a 6.45,winning a bronze.
He's about 175 pounds.
Even light heavyweights rule.

Weight certainly helps with the short events, but for 30' and up, many of the regular LWT WR times are better than the HWT WR times. I don't have data for the actual weights of HWT record holders in the longer events, but I would not be at all surprised if they are at the lower end of the weight range, like under 185 for men and under 150 for women.
Actually, I had just looked over the 70-79 and 80-89 records, so it is possible that age is another factor here. It might be that weight loses its advantages with age as well as with distance.

If it was serious training, how could shaq NOT win? I mean, not only is he really strong, his sheer size would have to put him at least under 6min. Lance would take the lightweight hands down, but I think he'd be second to Shaq.

Hypothetical Times:
Lance Armstrong - 6:20 (I know it's only 6 months but he is one of the best athletes in the world, possibly ever)
Shaq- 6:10
Michael Phelps- 5:53

I'm not sold on Shaq, as his cardiovascular capacity at the moment is severely lacking (ever watch him slog up and down the court?). Maybe after 6 months he would have had enough training to pull out a 2k, but 2ks are 80-90% aerobic. If not Shaq, then Tiki with his football (running) background would take it.
LA for Lwt no question.
