Which heart rate monitor?

Post by jbell » December 6th, 2006, 10:09 pm

Well, my parents really want to know what I want for Christmas. Other than a few things I want, they ask what is on the top of my list. I told them a hear rate monitor that works with my erg (model D). The only problem is I don’t know which heart rate monitor to get or which one works with the model D. Or would I be better off getting a heart rate monitor that isn't connected to the erg? I haven’t really done much research on all this, and I guess this would be my start. Thanks for your help.

I think for rowing the answer is pretty simple. You will definitely want your HR to show up on the PM3, so you need the transmitter for your erg from C2. You don't need a watch for the wrist at all, although you may want to get one if you run or do other things.

For the monitor, any polar belt should work, but highly recommend the fabric "wearlink" belt over the hard plastic one. There may be more choices these days, but I haven't really looked. Other brands may work too, but I have never seen a list of other brands that work (and more importantly, don't work). Nashbar or performance bike should be one of the best places to look generally:

Thanks for the link Mike B. Are there any others that work with the PM3, or will I have to buy it through concept 2? That nashbar one looks nice. Anyone else got some links?

Polar works and I wouldn't substitute even if there were others that are compatable with C2. Polar makes hrm's unlike most other companies that specialize in watches or shoes or something. I bought a timex because it was on sale but ended up returning it for a polar moniter because it wouldn't get a reading. Also, go for the most simple design, you don't need anything fancy. Mine has one button and is so easy to use it's great.

Cardiosport transmitters work with the PM3, I have one. Cardiosports HRMs are less expensive than Polar and they often go on sale for reduced prices. However, they are not very comfortable, because they are made of hard plastic and are a bit wide in places. I ended up buying a Polar WearLink instead.
