How Many People Row?

Post by gwjones » September 13th, 2006, 10:22 am

Okay - one child of mine if off to college and rowing - another just starting....

I know that rowing is a growing sport. This year, our local rowing club had about 200 high school age kids try out for the crew. It seems that the word is getting out these days.

My question is - does anyone have any accurate information or sources for the number of people who row across the US? Growth rates? etc.

Thanks!

Yes it is, we have Ted Heath to blame for that. We joined in 1973.

BTW, add me that's 7.

US Rowing list it's membership at 14,000 individuals and over 1000 clubs. I suspect that understates the number of US OTW rowers significantly as most recreational rowers are unlikely to sign up with US Rowing.

14,000 does not sound much. Here in Finland there are over 10,000 participants in the biggest annual rowing competition Sulkava race. :)
