Junior thread

Post by driver » July 27th, 2006, 7:11 am

Thought I'd create a thread for juniors to post on, like the one on the UK site, to talk about races/training and trialling for national squads etc. anything really! :)

I know there were a few juniors on the last site but are there any on the new forum?

To get the ball rolling could somebody please post anything and make yourself known!? anyone do any racing recently, any erg tests, anyone going to any races?

Hi, i'm a junior, one of the regulars from the UK site and a proud member of the mighty Taff Attack Racing Team.

On the erg, not much since last 2k test (6:20.1).
On the water, just got back from International debut, came 3rd as part of the Welsh 8+ at the Home International Regatta at Strathclyde in Scotland.

Junior here in the US currently about to race at Canadian Henley in a Jr A 2x

Been spending most of my time on the water, technique stuff just tuning up before the race.

Going to take a week off the 12th-19th then start aerobic pieces again for the fall season. Mmm...

Is this junior college or junior high school?? Either way I'm a junior. Hopefully will be on Chaminade's JV A (junior varsity A) and if we can get most of our boat to erg over the winter, hopefully medal at stotesbury/nationals (heck, maybe 1st).

That is always the question wth my team, getting kids to erg over the winter. It is real frustrating when you have the potential and then it never materializes.

whew! just got back from the henley! im pooped!

no medals unfortunatley for any 3 of my boats

i was in junior B 8, junior mens 4 (U17 i think), and mens 8 500m dash

came in 4/5 in the junior B 8, haha. good effort though.

junior mens 4 came in last, grrrrrrr. horrible conditions, thats what i blame that on.

and last but not least...the 500m dash. OH BOY. is all i have to say. and that is not a good 'oh boy'. we were at the line, we were the smallest, youngest, weekest boat out there. VERY intimidating, none of us were over 17 and our stroke was the only one that was that old. the kids we raced were all college kids (totally unfair). we get all lined up, get a yellow card for being late, of course. so the guy says attention, *beep noise* and were off. now, i have proof for the next part. we were first off the line for at least 200m! and we were destroying these college kids!!!!! i have pictures and video! but then....the worst. 4 seats oar popped out of the rigger and he couldnt get it back in, we eventually got caught up to and lost the race, sooooo dissapointing. our coach was though proud of our start and he congradulated us. THE END.

HAHAHAHAH, i may order the video from the henley website but its a pain cuz i would have to buy 8 more races, lol. i have it on camera phone and i have some sweet pictures but not digital, lol, maybe i can scan just to show you how freakin far ahead we were, it haunts me and will forever, lol.

I am in 2 seat in the boat that is winning, this is taken after 100m i think. This is A LOT to be winning by and then lose in a 500m dash if you didnt know. my gosh. and only 3 of the boats made the picture! there are 2 others even further back! do you see now what i have to live with!?

Had something similar happen me in a double scull a few months back, had clear water on 2nd place and way up on rest of field then doubles partner caught a horrendous crab and snapped the oarlock

Ben Rea, was your boat mostly lightweights? If so, I think lightweights are almost always really fast on their starts. I know that our JV-A boat this past year was a bunch of heavyweights (boat avg was around 175) and when we preacticed with our lightweights, they killed us off the start, but we eventually caught up. We had one really good start and that was at philly cities where we got 2nd.

yes, mostly lightweights, yea, thats how it goes, we get a great start, then we lose, haha. but 500m seems to be perfect for us.

I'm 6'3-6'4 and usually just under 200lbs, been rowing nearly a year now but only a few months seriously. That time is ok but should be 4-5 secs quicker by now, hoping to get 6:10 by November, starting to lift weights in three weeks so hopefully should see a big strength increase.
