How new rowers find virtual rowing teams

Post by joshemgi » April 7th, 2006, 4:56 pm

I am new to the Concept2 community. Our Concept2 Model D arrived February 10th, 2006 and my wife and I are now approaching 200,000 meters each. I am interested in joining a virtual rowing team for support and community. I see lists of names of teams, but no descriptions of what differentiates one from another. I have a friend on the Ancient Mariners, but have a year and a half to go before I reach 60. Suggestions?

Peace & Respect,

From your on-line log, you should be able to click on "University/Team Standings" which will get you to a list in a table showing standings (surprise!). You change whether you're looking at standings for all teams or some sub-set, and for total meters or for meters/member (some teams seem to focus on one or another). At any rate, from that table, you can click on the numbers to the left of each team's name, which will take you to a page showing team members...some of whom will have written a bit about themselves. For instance, one has to ask to join the Ancient Mariners. Other teams will take anyone, or are looking for people associated geographically, by experience (i.e., heart surgery survivors), goals (i.e., weight loss), status (i.e., Ducks in a Row is a women's team) or by affiliation with a school or other institution. Generally, you can get an idea about a team by looking at their team members. You will also note that some of the members of each team page there's a link that says "Send this member ranking e-mail" which will allow you to ask a team member about their team.

For instance, the Iron Oarsman would be happy to have you! It has both a brick-and-mortarand a virtualcomponents.

Good luck picking a team!

Just for interest, you might want to check out the "Eh Team" (currently 15th in the rankings Alissa mentioned.) It started as a team for people from Canada or anyone who thinks Canada is a nice place. But now we've got rowers from the US and from Germany. One thing that is fun with the Eh Team is that we're trying to row a really big virtual boat all the way around the world. So we get a geography lesson and work towards a team goal (and your metres are listed a on Google Earth file.) It gives another incentive to put in the meters! You can check out more info. at http://216.119.121.169/Cross%20Canada%2 ... ic_row.htm

You should definitely join a team, whoever you decide to go with. It's fun, you can learn a lot and it keeps you going! Good luck! John.

Last night I got hate mail from an ancient mariner.

After putting the children to bed and watching a romantic movie called "Just Like Heaven (2005)" with my wife, I checked my mail before going to bed. Oh man, I got an earful from an ancient mariner. I was called a "bad sport..." for mobilizing people to log their miles. My goal is to make as many people row as much as possible and bring traffic to the concept2 website. I wonder if the Ducks have gotten any hate mail?

If this is your main interest in joining a virtual team, check out this forum for teams that have their own thread. They are the ones that have established a place of support and community. The rest are just for teaming up meters.

Virtual teams that are very active on the US Forum are Taff Attack and Ducks in a Row. Row Pain, Row Gain was active, but not so much any more. While Xeno, the "leader" of the Iron Oarsman VT is very active, the rest of his team is not. The British Forum at http://www.concept2.co.uk/forum/ has a few teams with their own threads; Sub7, Forum Flyers, Paddy Power, Old Wrecks, and W.I.S.E. Two other teams MAD and Team Oarsome have threads, but are very restrictive on who can join.
