If you use Just Row, what happens is as you describe.
You can also program any specific piece using the PM. If the piece is a standard distance it will upload to your C2 log and to the Rankings if you wish. If non-standard or intervals it goes to log only.
To use the PM: Press any button to switch on, then:
Select Workout. You get a choice:
Standard
Custom
Rerow
New
Pressing any of these gives you a specific selection. The possibilities are many.

If you use Ergdata, there are daily pieces called Work Out of the Day (WOD):

These can be far too complex to input by hand, so Ergdata on a phone or tablet can connect to PM, download them and then upload our results to daily leaderboards.
In any standard or programmed piece, you can do as you like, using Just Row. If you stop, the time keeps going. The rankings cover certain times and distances only; these you can see on the C2 log page. Intervals are intervals only and never ranked, save in the WOD boards.
