Used C2 for Sale
Hey guys,
I’m new here and have never practiced indoor rowing before. Having gone through some of the brands and types of rowers, I stumbled across this brand (to confess never heard before lol) but after doing a study came to know it’s the de facto of rowers. While researching used platforms I came across this specific version of concept 2 that goes for 400€, still dubious which year it was manufactured. I was wondering if someone could give their thoughts on this version.
Thanks a ton

Re: Used C2 for Sale
Ask for a photo of the model & serial number from the erg being sold. Ask what performance monitor is included (ex: PM3, PM4, PM5), and is it working.
"Used C2 for Sale" doesn't say much. Similar to saying "Used FORD for sale". C2 is short for Concept2, Concept2 has been making ergs for 40 years. 400€ is too much for a 30 year old erg, and is a very good deal for anything 5 years old or less (no tax, no shipping).
Decode the model to find what model erg is for sale. See https://www.concept2.co.uk/service/indoor-rowers
Decode the serial number to get the manufacture year. Once you know model you can google how to decode the serial number.

Re: Used C2 for Sale
Concept 2 has made four models, named Model A, Model B, Model C, and Model D (a.k.a. Row Erg).
A is definitely obsolete but a collector's item: Think of it as a Model T car.
B is dated but can work fine: Think of it as a '57 Chevy.
C and D are perfectly usable. C was made from 1993 to 2003 and D (Row Erg) since.
During COVID, D models were selling used for nearly new price ($900 in the U.S.). C a little but not much less. Prices have softened a bit since then but 400€ does not sound like an excessive price (depending on condition).
If it has been used in a gym it might be worn in various ways, but all major parts are replaceable. If it works well, it will probably last an individual a long time before needing anything.
The PM performace monitor has an "odometer" that shows total kilometers but on all models through 2010 or so that reset to 0 if stored with dead batteries. It will give you an idea of the minimum number of meters. 10 million is not a lot. More probably means gym usage.
Check that the computer works and that the battery compartment doesn't have corrosion from battery leakage.
Do you have a friend who is familiar with what it should feel like and how the PM should work?

Re: Used C2 for Sale
Thanks a lot for your reply @Tsnor. I really appreciate it. It was a C2 PM2 which was quite old. The guy didn't give away much info and the only thing he told me was he just sold it. I've decided to go with a new one C2 PM5 RowErg from Rogue.com. They had a good deal compared to the competitors and I was hesitant to get a second hand since some of them didn't have the box, docs, and the warranty and they went for 800-850€.

Re: Used C2 for Sale
@gvcormac, thanks a lot for the explanation! great insights.
Actually, it was a c2 PM2 which was quite old and the guy just told me he sold it to someone else .
It didn't stop me from searching more. The search did come with leveling up my budget for the machine. I came across a second-hand c2 PM5 (~20000m) for 800€ but the man didn't have the box, docs, and the warranty. This was quite an important factor for me if I were to move elsewhere or sell it in the future. Eventually, I decided to go with a new one from rogue.com which was around 1050€, and get rid of any worries and anxiety I would have had taking a second hand lol.
I love the community here and how supportive people are. Thanks once again
Looking forward to getting my hands on the new c2. Do you have any suggestions for someone who hasn't trained on a c2 before ?

Re: Used C2 for Sale
Model C came with PM2. Here is a page that has links to all models.
https://www.concept2.com/service/indoor ... schematics
They are visually distinctive. The most similar are C and D. The C has a straight wooden handle, and the D has an angled one. Also different baffle on the fan -- C is a half moon and D is louvred.
C came with PM2. D came with PM3 originally; lately PM5.

Re: Used C2 for Sale
Can't go wrong with new! I bought a D new in 2003 and another for my wife in 2013. Both have millions of metres with no maintenance. Last year I bought a bike erg, which is nearing 5 million (but bike erg metres only count for 1/2.

Good decision, you won't regret it if you keep staying motivated to row.sanjay2593 wrote: ↑June 20th, 2022, 5:41 am@gvcormac, thanks a lot for the explanation! great insights.

First of all, learn & master the basics, stay patient, stay humble, read lots of posts, watch technique videos, enjoy the good days, and the early progress, as that will tail off and it will become hard, and, possibly most importantly, do not compare yourself to anyone else other than yourself.
Love the process, and view the results as slightly secondary and you'll be far better prepared to weather the inevitable dips in motivation and progress. Identify yourself as a rower, and you'll build an affinity that will hopefully keep you coming back again and again.

Thank you!
I'll have a look. I need to start dedicating time to understanding the basics and mastering them.

Some of the videos are obsessed with form. When I started (circa 1990) I just looked at the Concept 2 pictogram and rowed. It seemed very natural.sanjay2593 wrote: ↑June 20th, 2022, 1:05 pmThank you!
