Chaffing

Post by C.Thom » December 4th, 2020, 1:54 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to rowing, only had the Model D for few weeks, and for the first time I've experienced chaffing on the bum. Is this a normal right of passage? Poor attire choice (boxer briefs?) Just toughen up? Last night on was on the machine for 50 minutes, but typically it has been 10 to 30 minutes.

Cheers,

Curtis

Affects everybody differently...but it happens. I find two layers of clothing pants/shorts and a seat pad stops it happening for up to an hour. Any longer ... still happens.

Compression bottoms are your friends. Form fitted, no loose material to rub your backside. Also, best to increase your duration gradually.

Hi Mike and Eric,

Thanks for the advise! It's a bit tender in the tail bone region, so I will make investments in the suggested remedies. Thanks again!

Cheers,

Curtis

If it's tailbone, then you would probably benefit from the C2 seat pad, or an aftermarket equivalent

Just remember that the cutout is towards the back, not the front !

Ironically, the C2 seat is not really rower friendly, like seats in actual rowing shells. A seat pad, as suggested, may help - it doesn't need to be thick, just cut out in the right places (tailbone and sit bones).

Also, you may try some Vaseline or similar, or cycling chamois cream on the affected areas.

Hi Robbie and Mark,

Yeah, the raw bit is the upper crack (sorry) and the tailbone area. I'll try a pad and some ointment. So, you just smear some "gunk" on the raw area before getting dressed to workout? Thin layer? Thick layer?

Now, would it be recommended to not erg until the raw bits heal or just row with a bit more care for a bit?

Thanks for the advise.

Cheers,

Curtis

I had the same issue for a long time. Switched to rowing in UnderArmour compression shorts and also used Chamois Buttr. The C2 seat pad also helped.

I've now switched to a Citius Remex seat pad which while expensive has been a godsend. No chaffing and I haven't used the Buttr for ages now.

Good luck....I know how sore that is in the shower!!! 😲

Hi Alex,

Yeah, I didn't realize I had the chaffing until I got into the shower and the water hit... unpleasant surprise! Thanks for the tips and understanding.

Cheers,

Curtis

Definately :o

I should add that anything you can do to stop the sweat getting down that area will help. Maybe not a fashion statement but a headband/bandana to soak up the brow sweat helped me too......keep my glasses on also :D

I had the same issue with the OEM seat when I first picked up the rower a couple of years ago. I would get a small sore at the base of my tailbone and “upper crack” as you would say. The sore was smaller than a dime and would leave a small bit of blood on my padded rowing shorts. It would definitely sting when the water would hit it in the shower. I finally sprung for an aftermarket seat by EndureRow and haven’t had a problem since. For me, that was money well spent.

Well, I am a bit relieved to see I’m not the only one who has experienced this. Not exactly the location of issue you like to discuss on a forum! I am now looking at an EndureRow seat, as I’ve certainly identified the parts of the C2 seat that disagree with my posterior dimensions seem perfectly addressed in the EndureRow seat.

If anyone using the EndureRow would care to update their experience, I’d appreciate it. I’m not trying to hijack this thread, as this information should be directly useful to the OP, and pertinent to the discussion. We must join together and eliminate crack damage! :D
