How do age rankings work when your birthday is halfway through a season?

Hey all,

My birthday is coming up in 8 months and I'll be moved up to the next age bracket. One of my arbitrary goals for myself by then is to see how many top 10's I can end with before my big milestone birthday. But if I bump up to a new division in September, with the season having started in May, would any new personal bests erase the ranking spots from the younger age scores from May 2020 - Sept 2020, and thus not let me find out what they end up being ranked at the conclusion of that season in May 2021? If so, is there a way around it, like making a temporary alternate account and only posting new personal bests on that one for the remainder of the season in the new age category, or just not posting any new ranking distances at all post-birthday until the following season starts?

I know it sounds like a silly thing to care about, but certainly I'm not close to breaking any records, and with this small target I'm motivated to train harder with these 8 months just because of knowing that I have this time table before I'm dumped into a new group where I can spend a leisurely 10 years working my way back up again

Cheers all

Your age for C2 is your age on May 1st.

I don't think that's right in the context of this thread James - more pertinent to [some] race meetings. When I last went up an age bracket in the 2018 season all of my ranked pieces were put into the higher age bracket because my best times were set once I'd passed the milestone birthday. I think if my best times had been set in the earlier part of the season then they would clearly have been counted in the younger age group. You can only have one ranked piece per distance per season.

As a result, if you want to see how your younger results compare, you must either not beat them later in the year, or not rank the results if you do. Alternatively just make a note of your younger results and for your own satisfaction do your own comparison with the final tables! Its actually rather good when you just pop up an age group - the same times suddenly look a whole lot more competitive!

Got it. Thanks for the info!

As far as the online rankings go I've found that my age on the day I do the piece determines the age group in which it counts.

The C2 ranking year starts May 1st.

For the Nonathlon, your age on May 1st is your age for the whole ranking year.

For USRowing events your age on December 31st determines your age for the whole year. (If your birthday is December 31st your get to row as a 50-year-old for the whole year that you are still 49, etc.) International events seem to follow this protocol too.

Confusing.

When I used to organise the Basingstoke races it was always "age on day of event" that I used to divide up the folks that were rowing.

When I organized the late, lamented NE2KC I also used 'age on the day of the event" too. BIRC did too (I don't know if BRIC does), and I remember that George Meredith had to row the 55-59 division 6 times because on the year he turned 60 the race was held a bit earlier than usual and fell a few days before his birthday.

Hi all,

Just trying to post on each post dad is mentioned in.

Sadly my Dad, George Meredith, had to stop rowing many years ago. Maybe 2010.

This was due to Alzheimer’s:-(

Then sadly just before Xmas he passed away aged 72.

Many of you will know that he held the British Record for v50 lwt at every distance! 2000m right up to marathon! Over the years the records have gradually gone but he still holds the 5000m record.

Sad time but I wanted to let the indoor rowing community know
